Getting people to read my book is proving harder than writing it

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Thomas Larmore, Dec 22, 2021.

I think it's a good book, but so far the people I've given it to have been pretty slow about reading it.

They tell me they are not "readers" which means, I suppose, they normally don't read books.

The problem is, I don't know any "readers" -- people like me who like to read books.

My advice is to not ask people you know to read your book. You can tell them about it for sure; if they are interested in reading it, they will tell you, out of genuine interest or out of a conceived social obligation. Outside of people you are close with, it can be difficult to determine the meaning behind their stated interest in reading it. That's why it's best not to follow up. If they want to read it, they will, and if they want to tell you about their experience, you'll hear from them.

Look around here. Everyone here reads and writes, loves words. Submit your book, in chapters, to the Workshop and you'll get some honest responses.

You might look for a writer's group in your area. I resisted joining such a group for decades (I really hate talking about writing) but went along to one with a friend one time just because she didn't want to go alone. She hasn't been back in 18 months. I've been attending for over three years. When I finished a book this month and asked if anyone would be willing to be a beta, four out of the eight or ten who regularly attend promptly volunteered.
