Hey! New here and an aspiring writer, I guess.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Zxi, Apr 8, 2017.

Hey, I'm Zxi and I'm a young writer from the UK. Based on my past, my poetry tends to be slightly dark compared to your regular 'prancing around a field' type thing. I enjoy writing creatively and surprisingly it has gotten me to the top of my class which is where I am today.

I may just be seen as a typical angsty teen but I want to get to know some people here and start building on my skills and helping others with their writing, so I thought "Well, let's give this a shot."

Angsty is dull, but get rid of it and enjoy

The point of the word 'angsty' is to give myself a dull appearance. I don't want to jazz myself up or anything :x

What genre do you like to write, and what genre are you good at writing?

I enjoy writing horror, but sudden shocks and happenings within the genre are not particularly well written in my stories. Most people say my best genre is a mix of fantasy and horror. Thanks for supporting me ^~^

That slow creeping horror (think when the alien is approaching what's-his-face in the ducts in Alien, or the uncertainty in It Follows) is far better than silly jump scares, when some silly crap appears in a bathroom mirror accompanied by a clash of music... Or even worse, someone thumps like a madman on a car window to return a dropped purse.

I would aim for creepy/ spooky... I would never aim for "sudden shocks and happenings".

Sorry for my random post above by the way, I was drunk.

    Hello Zxi,

I write Horror, and, having studied poetry, use a great amount of poetics in my writing. When you are ready, post your work and tag me. I'll give you my thoughts.

Ah, no worries. I do find that sudden jumps can be a bit...meh. That's why a lot of horror games fail to keep me engaged :/. It always feels like the jump-scares are childish, like sneaking around the corner to jump out and 'scare' a younger sibling.

Oh, and don't mind my constant and totally judicious use of certain words...

I used to read Poe quite a lot. I really like his works but school stuff caught up with me, haven't had a spare moment since...

Indeed, it is the equivalent of saying "boo". Gets old, fast.

    Zxi,

Horror is something I used to love when I was younger, I'd end up with bad dreams so I had to quit! But, as I've gotten older I can pick it up now and again. I agree that the 'boo' is overused, but can be a useful tool.

I wanted to leave you a quote I enjoy and try to remind my authors, "...you are a writer the moment you start writing, not when you've sold your first book." ~Rob Bignell. Another is, "You are not an 'aspiring author'. You are a pre-published author and the rest is just details." I'm not sure who to give credit to for the second, but I like it!

    Good luck with your writing!

Welcome to the forum Zxi. Looking forward to sharing ideas. I write in the fantasy genre mainly but I also have a Sci-fi project on the go too. I share your distain for the sudden jump trope in horror as I've always found it less than inspiring.
