    Good evening

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Scapa, Mar 15, 2025.

    Hi everybody,

    how is everyone doing?

I'm (obviously) new to this forum. I'm writing Romance and Thriller and if there is one thing I'm struggling the most with that that's filling the pages. I'm jealous of all you constantly deleting words and words during your edits.

I often got nice ideas and great beginnings, but then I feel like I can't fill the pages. Don't get me wrong, I can, but not without feeling most of it isn't driving the story any further.

    How about you?

    Cheers

Good evening... Igor, show our guest into the drawing room.

So do you feel that you're under-writing? That your work isn't evocative enough? I get that, I really do, because I used to write like that when I started. It takes time to be able to make the words flow the way you want, but it's really easy to go too far in the other direction and overwrite. Probably the best way for us to help you (which I'm sure we can) is to share some of your work and ask for targeted help with passages and sentences.

Look forwards to seeing you around the forum and good luck!

Thanks for your reply. So, I think it's likely a pressure thing. Let me explain it this way: Often, when I'm reading a book then at whichever page I feel like, wow, already page, say, 150 and I the story did only go on for two days. How did the author fill 150 pages with only two days of story WITHOUT being boring? I couldn't put so much story into just two days. So yeah, that's where I'm struggling.

Welcome. I feel like I have that sane issue. I always tend to get to the point, and it baffles me how authors can get into that flow where the word count can be so substantial

If you're curious, you can start a thread on it and see how different people do it.

Hello and welcome, Scapa, and yes, filling those pages can seem like a lot of work! For me, it requires as much thinking as writing, but if I stick with it long enough, the next part will eventually let itself be known.

A great way to hone your skills, and get more in touch with your own writer's voice, is by writing short stories. You might like to check out the story writing contests on this site.

Looking forward to seeing you in the forums!

Yeah, I think it's a bit pressure related. It MUST work. I MUST reach a certain amount of words.

Short stories sound like a great idea to practice! The problem with contests is that I'm not speaking English natively :)
