    Hello world!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Anthony B. Parr, Dec 8, 2022.

    Greetings and salutations!

My name is Anthony and I mostly write novels and short stories in the western genre. I hold degrees in History, Special Education, and Behavioral Psychology. I ran a few behavioral classrooms across two districts in my previous career. Currently, I reside with my family north of New Orleans. When not writing, I help my spouse restore old houses and play retro video games.

Nice. :) Would you mind naming a few of your favorite western novels and/or history books about that era? I’m always looking to add to my TBR list.

    Welcome Anthony.
I grew up with Zane Grey but as an adult, I started my history with HG wells and moved to Mark Twain, then to Michener.
The last eight years I've been serious about my writing and I write historical fiction although I've written two other contemporary mystery type books.
    My true love is history.

Hey there, Bone2Pick. I love most of what Louis L'amour has written, particularly Hondo and The Lonesome Gods. True Grit is a wonder and Lonesome Dove has a very comfortable rolling narrative. However, my love of the "wild west" has been colored significantly by southern literature, so Faulkner, Lee, Walker, Twain, and a little Rice and the influence that the post-Civil War South had upon the "west." Regarding the impact of the Civil War, I go to Lee's Tigers, Battle Cry of Freedom, and War the Forged a Nation. There is a strange little book called The Mind of the South that helps puzzle things out a bit... Hope that helps! Thanks for the support. :)

Thundair, I love Zane Grey novels. There are a few collections on my shelves. Well's Vol.I&II first ed. are two of my prized possessions. :) You have great taste! One of my degrees is in History and I always try to infuse my love of history in what I write. Usually, the bits manifest as subtle details that inform a behavior or add flavor to a scene, I work hard to not data dump all of the fun things that I could easily obsess over. Thanks for sharing.

It does help, thank you. I read both of those Louis L’Amour books just this year. :) And I have Battle Cry of Freedom on my bookshelf, but I’ve yet to read it. It’s gonna have to be a 2023 read.
