    Help: Pink Food for Baby Shower

    Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Carmina, Oct 27, 2009.

    My sister is about to have a chest-burster (ok baby) pop out. The family is putting together a baby shower for her on Nov. 7th. I somehow ended up up volunteering for food. NO idea when I did this..but apparently I did. Anyway...we are going with a pink theme to be cute/obnoxious. I am looking for recipes for pink dishes....and I mean beyond just putting food dye in everything. Pink cake is a given. I was looking for dips and salads and soup recipes. Any suggestions? I want lunch-time foods that are easy to make and can be served buffet style. By the way...I am a lousy cook. HELP!!!

    hmm... pink lemonade is a must, eh?

    Pink Fruit Dip
    (from all recipes.com - http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Pink-Fruit-Dip/Detail.aspx)

    2 (6 ounce) containers vanilla yogurt
    1 cup sour cream
    1/4 cup white sugar
    1/4 cup grenadine

    In a bowl, stir together yogurt, sour cream, sugar, and grenadine; mix well. Cover and refrigerate 2 hours to overnight to allow flavors to meld. (the actual recipe calls for mayo as well, but upon reading the reviews, cutting the mayo is best)

    Also, "Fluffy Pink Fruit Salad"
    (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Fluffy-Pink-Fruit-Salad/Detail.aspx)

    1 (10 ounce) jar maraschino cherries
    1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
    2 cups whipping cream, whipped
    1 (20 ounce) can pineapple tidbits, drained
    1 (15.25 ounce) can fruit cocktail, drained
    1 (15 ounce) can sliced peaches, drained and diced
    6 medium firm bananas, sliced
    3 cups pastel miniature marshmallows

    Drain cherries, reserving 1/3 cup juice (save remaining juice for another use). Cut cherries in half; set aside. In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and reserved cherry juice until smooth. Fold in whipped cream. Fold in cherries, pineapple, fruit cocktail, peaches, bananas and marshmallows. Transfer to a serving bowl. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

    I found most of my search for pink foods turns up sweets/sugars/fruits, though I'm sure they'll be others who can locate decent pink non-sweets~! good luck!

    Strawberry Mousse.

    Also, if you were to serve a white meat dish (chicken, turley, pork - yeah, I know you're a vegetarian, but for others in the party) you could make a sauce of yogurt or sour cream with a little pureed sweet red pepper, or with tomato paste, and that would add both color and flavor (maybe some garlic or lemon for flavor as well).

    How about Raspberry Mousse then?

    Blanched white asparagus drizziled with a white wine lemon cream sauce with paprika. The paprika will make the sauce somewhat pink as well as adding flavor.

    I think she meant "chest burster" as in, breast swelling with milk and growing to twice their normal size. But. I don't know. Carmina?

    Raspberry Punch

    Ginger Ale
    Raspberry Sherbet
    Frozen raspberries
    Mix all of the ingredients and keep chill until ready to serve.

    Edible Pacifiers

    You Will Need:
    1 box of tooth picks
    1 bag of Nilla Wafers
    1 bag of Peach Rings
    1 bag of Large Gum Drops

    Take a tooth pick and insert it in the middle of a nilla wafer. Then insert the bottom of the tooth pick in the middle of a peach ring. Last you insert the top of the tooth pick in the gum drop. There you have it, an edible pacifier.

    I know there are other recipes for edible paicifiers, but they are a fabulous baby shower treat. I love them. You can make them many ways and they look fabulous.

    Red Velvet Balls:

    Make a red velvet cake, or add red food coloring to a yellow cake mix. Let it cool, then crumble the cake up and mix it with one container of cream cheese icing, Let the new 'dough' cool in the fridge for an hour, and form into balls. Freeze balls a good few hours, and melt some white almond bark. If you want, you could dye this pink. Dip frozen balls in the melted chocolate, and let sit on a cookie sheet till hard. Delicious!

    I've never been to a baby shower. These things sound delicious, but slightly too much of a sugar overdose. We eat a lot of savoury here and off the top of my head, dips like taramasalata (I think that's the name most English speakers use?), and beetroot pureed with garlic and yoghurt are both pink, but maybe you don't eat that kind of thing! We also have fantastic pink, yes really pink(ish) coloured big plump olives called 'Çizik'.
    Tried to send pics but couldn't figure out how...

    Borscht? It has beets in it, and is served with sour cream, so it ends up being a pretty vivid, girly shade of pink.

    Borscht
    Print Options

    * Print (no photos)
    * Print (with photos)

    Ingredients

    * 8 cups beef broth*
    * 1 pound slice of meaty bone-in beef shank
    * 1 large onion, peeled, quartered
    * 4 large beets, peeled, chopped
    * 4 carrots, peeled, chopped
    * 1 large russet potato, peeled, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
    * 2 cups thinly sliced cabbage
    * 3/4 cup chopped fresh dill
    * 3 Tbsp red wine vinegar
    * 1 cup sour cream
    * Salt and pepper to taste

    *Use gluten-free broth if you are cooking gluten-free
    Method

    1 Bring 4 cups of the beef broth, the beef shank, and onion to boil in large pot. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until meat is tender, about 1 hour 30 minutes.

    2 Transfer meat to work surface; trim fat, sinew and bone and discard. Chop meat; cover and chill. Cool broth slightly. Chill in pot until cold, at least 4 hours and up to 1 day.

    3 Spoon fat from top of chilled broth and discard. Add remaining 4 cups broth, beets, carrots, and potato; bring to boil. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer until vegetables are tender, about 30 minutes.

    4 Stir in meat, cabbage and 1/2 cup dill; cook until cabbage is tender, about 15 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir in vinegar.

    Ladle soup into bowls. Top with sour cream and remaining 1/4 cup dill.

    Serves 6.

    Some other savoury snack ideas...

    Potato skins (using pontiac, desiree or bison varieties, as they have the appropriate reddish-pink skin). Cut the skins fairly thickly, season to taste (salt & pepper or favourite herbs and spices) and either deep fry or bake, serve with sour cream & chives or sweet chilli sauce, or any other favourite dip.

    Strips of ham, or bacon, wrapped around various tid-bits.

    Prawn/shrimp cocktails.

    Quiche/frittata with beets or beet juice for the colour.

    Like the potato skins idea.

    Went shopping last night...got pink yogurt covered pretzels, pink animal cookies, and some candy. Have some ideas for dip. Anyone have a yogurt fruit dip recipe?

    If you make homemade coleslaw with red cabbage instead of white it always comes out pink... Was a big surprise the first time :p

    Also Salmon roulade? I'm allergic but I've seen other people eat it and they say it's very nice.

    I know you said you didnt want to dye things, but what about this:

    Pink fondue, and the dipping foods like cake or fruit, etc could be cut out into baby-themed pieces? That is, if you have good cutting skillz. :D Unlike me. But I think it'd be cute?

    How about home made raspberry ice cream or frozen yogurt?

    There's also the possibility of pink fairy floss if you have a fairy floss maker (if not just buy it from the supermarket, ahaha).

    Oh and if you wanted to get creative if you could make a trifle with different layers of pink and light reds.

    Or pink ice-cream sandwich biscuts, which would look pretty cool if you stacked them to form a small tower.

    :-D

    Salmon sushi is good, and the salmons color is sorta pink. (I'm not sure if your the kind of vegetarian that eats fish or not)

    There is a certain type of baklava that has pink coating, if you have a baklava shop next to you i'm sure they'll know about it.
