    Wide-Eyed and Bushy-Tailed

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by JavaMan, Jul 16, 2008.

Hi all! I Just had my "American breakfast" (coffee and a ciggarette) so I'd like to say that I'm happy to be here.

People have always, since high school, told me that I should be a writer. For the past year, I've been working hard at it. Poe is a big influence on me, and have been studying his unique combination of spirtuality, insanity, and love. I dont want to say to much about myself specifically becuase my identity was stolen before - sorry, just nervous.

Off and on I've also been working on a short novel, but I don't seriously expect to publish it for a long time. Maybe I'll try free-lance work instead....

    Thanks for reading!

Hello Java Man, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here, or even the second thing (i.e. right after breakfast). It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Sup Java, I'm new here too. Most people here seem to be nice, and they can probably give you some tips on publishing once you want to.

Welcome JavaMan! (Cigarettes and coffee use to be my breakfast of choice, until I quit, which I'm happy about, but not when I hear or see the words cigarettes and coffee used in the same sentence-then I just get jealous of those who get to have such a great combo together! haha). I'm an English major and am in the process of starting my first novel, so I kind of know how you feel (I'm just a bit more amateur!). Welcome to the site and if you ever want to chat, leave a message!!

Welcome JavaMan! I too am a Poe lover also. I also love coffee... but nix on the cigarettes. My mom was a two pack a day nicotine junkie for twenty years and has been trying to quit since New Years.

I know you'll enjoy being here and learning from so many talented people.
    Hope to see you around.
