1. Horror Fans - Please help me?

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Deleted member 25916, Jul 20, 2017.

Back in the early - mid 90's I read a horror novel (what? I know, shocking). It was a big paperback, probably close to 500 pages (as most things I read were). It had a mountain and maybe a bear on the cover and it was about a kid who had night terrors. I read it while on a camping trip (and the kid had a lot of night terrors about bears so I didn't sleep much).

I was WAY too young, and really shouldn't have been reading it, but parts of it have stuck with me. I have been trying to find it for years, google searches, wandering book stores, goodreads. I don't know if I'm remembering it wrong or what, but I REALLY want to read it again. I have no clue who the author was.

Ringing any bells for anyone? I shall be forever in your debt.

Can you remember any other details at all? It sort of rings a bell but nothing concrete.

Long shot, but could it be The Eyes of Darkness by Dean Koontz? Long shot because it's really about a kid's mother rather than the kid, but he does have night terrors and it does involve a mountain. Don't remember any bears though. :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Eyes_of_Darkness

ETA: Or this one? I haven't read it, but sounds like it fits the bill. https://ericlahti.wordpress.com/2016/03/23/book-review-bears-of-glass-by-n-a-shoemaker/

Edit again... that one was published last year, so maybe not

  3. No, it's not Koontz, I have lots by him. That's not it. It's not Bears of Glass either.

The only thing I remember really is that nearly all of his night terrors had to do with nature (trees, bears, wolves, etc.) and they were trying to kill him and they talked to him to try to lure him out of his bedroom window or something. I really wish I could remember more.

Good taste - I love Koontz!

I will keep thinking. I think @Iain Aschendale is a horror fan who might have some ideas.

  5. Thank you - me too!

I appreciate the help. If it helps, I think it was a fairly dry, long winded kind of writing style. I remember having to reread somewhat frequently (because I was far too young to be reading it) and he may have been molested? I'm not sure, maybe not, but I think that might have been what started the night terrors originally?

  7. My first thought was The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, but that's rather slim and doesn't have night terrors.

Smells like Koontz though, I'll think on it.

Wow, that was poorly written, though the subject material looks interesting. I've seen bears screwing... don't think I'd want to be between two of them.

  9. And you just couldn't resist sharing the trauma :superlaugh:

  10. Oh, shape-shifting bears, not @Wreybies and a buddy...

  11. Thank you. Unless I'm missing one of his somewhere, it's not him. I appreciate the help.

I also found a list of Books about Bears... and to be fair, the MCs were hairy and spent a lot of time on all fours.

  16. The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon was published in 1999, it wasn't out yet. :(

I assume you've tried Google Images, looking for covers, as well as vanilla Google? I've occasionally found a book that way

Was the kid a boy or a girl?

  18. No luck anywhere. A boy.
