    BISAC codes?

Discussion in 'Self-Publishing' started by SapereAude, Mar 8, 2021.

The learning process in regard to self-publishing seems to be one of those proverbial slippery slopes. Once you get started, the issues keep snowballing. It seems that for every answer I find or receive, I immediately come up with two new questions.

Last night I stumbled across BISAC codes ( https://www.ingramspark.com/blog/bisac-subject-codes ). I'm not a member of the organization, so I'm now sleuthing the Internet to get a full listing of the codes. Once I have it, though -- what do I do with it?

Where and how does a self-publisher actually use these codes, for readers and book stores to find? I suppose for e-books it would be entered in the metadata? What about for print books? Do publishers put these codes on the copyright page, or on the back cover, or ___? How are they listed -- by code number, or the text description, or both?

Never heard of it like that but it seems that's what people call "categories" on Amazon? On Amazon you put that information in the keywords and then you can also send an email to the KDP help requesting the specific categories (or removing categories your book got put in inaccurately). Here is an article about that: https://kindlepreneur.com/how-to-choose-the-best-kindle-ebook-kdp-category/

Now, books on Amazon will only show three categories on the book's webpage for whatever reason. I use bookspry's "category spy" (free) to check on my full categories or to check other author's books to see what categories they have used. (https://deals.bookspry.com/author/login/). To determine what categories I want I pick the ones that make the most sense and also what other popular books similar to mine are using.

I have never heard of using number codes. KDP has charts to offer keywords that should get you in the right category. For example, here are the history sub category keywords: https://kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201708420
