    Movie Recommendations?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Dude_guy_yeah!, Mar 18, 2009.

I've got this sudden craze for watching some good movies I can lay my hands on - which, unfortunately, is rather hampered by my lack of movie knowledge, so I'd like some recommendations.

To help thee in thy choice, some of my favourite movies are (in no particular order):

    Zodiac
    American Beauty
    No Country for Old Men
    Juno
    Fight Club
    The Dark Knight
    The Departed
    Sweeney Todd
    Vicky Christina Barcelona
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
    Slumdog Millionaire
    Iron Man
    Wall-e

If for some reason you haven't yet, The Godfather. It is the only movie I've seen that I would call perfect.

Beyond that, you might like Minority Report and Mystic River.

If you want to expand your knowledge of movies, watch Citizen Kane which despite its age is still beautiful. Another, even older one that's very interesting is Metropolis.

I love movies.. these are some of my favourites

Elizabeth (the first movie, not the second, the second was awful)

    The Shawshank Redemption

    Life is Beautiful

    Angela's Ashes

Mask (not to be confused with The Mask, Lol.. although I do love that movie too.. but that's more of a childhood favourite thing)

    Shallow Hal

Hot Rod/Stepbrothers (If you're into friviolous comedy.. I myself have a soft spot for it.. others would rather stab themselves than seriously consider it, lol)

    Spirited Away (Just brilliant, really)

I've got a bit of a mental blank at the moment.. but I will get back to you..

You need to watch 'Domino' it has Kira Knightly as a bad a** bounty hunter. It has string language, and some nudity. But it is AWESOME!

I mostly prefer chickflicks, but the Ocean was good too.

I dunno, I liked Pirates of the Carribean movies too..and Terminator 2 was superb.

Call me weird but Jerry Maguire was good too. And hey, can we forget James Bond?

Hard candy - Pretty intense thriller.

    Eurotrip - Comedy gold.

Iron Man, Hulk (the 2008 reboot, not the awful 2003 one) and the Dark Knight are good comic adaptations, too.

    Bella.

BellaBellaBella. Watch Bella. It poses the question "What do you live for? Who would you die for?"
It's all about the importance of life, and surrounds to characters, one of which has recently become pregnant and has decided to get an abortion. The other man (who is not her lover) has had an experience that makes him reevaluate the sanctity of life and tries to persuade her not to have the abortion.

It's quite pro-life in its message, but I'm pro-choice, and it's my favourite movie, so dont let that hold you back.

The symbology, raw cinematography, and truly moving story make it my all-time favourite.

    The Dark Knight (like you)
    Batman Begins
    Batman Returns
    The Incredible Hulk (2008)
    Sling Blade
    Soul Food
    Sin City
Kill Bill vol. 1 and 2

That's all I can think of for now.

If you want a movie that grabs your heart and squeezes. But also makes you think, 'August Rush' is a really good movie too.

    Seconded!
And Slumdog Millionaire is truly a great movie, as no movie is perfect until there is random dancing!

I just watched the Boy in the Striped Pajamas yesterday and it was amazing. I've never read the book, but the movie really redefines your paradigms.
Also Eagle Eye is a good movie. If you liked Transformers (same actor and lots of action), you'll probably enjoy it.
Why not go for some Disney? Fox and the Hound? Beauty and the Beast? The first ones only of course. Disney couldn't make a sequel to save it's life.

Or why not watch one of my all time favorites: the A&E version of Pride and Prejudice. It'll be five hours well spent :D

(uh, if anyone liked Slumdog Millionaire, they might like reading the book the movie is based on too-Q and A by Vikas Swaroop, um, the book is different from the movie though.)

    Ok,
A lot like love( I heart Ashton Kutcher)
The Devil wears Prada(I liked it better than the book)
    Raise Your Voice(Hilary Duff)
Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen

I've been told I have strange taste in movies, but here's what comes to mind at the moment.

If your mood's for musical, gothic, perverse:
    Sweeney Todd

    Asian, artistic, action:
    Hero
    House of Flying Daggers

    Whimsical, sweet, anime:
    Spirited Away
    Kiki's Delivery Service
    Totoro

    Zany &/or stupid comedy:
    Rat Race
    Zoolander
    Hot Rod
    Dodge Ball
    She's the Man

    Just awesome overall:
    August Rush
    Slumdog Millionaire
    Coraline
    Iron Man
    Wall-e

    Also: Invader Zim vids

Makes you want to gouge your eyes out with knitting needles, so beware (I'm almost not kidding!):
    Mamma Mia

    Mamma Mia was okay...

August Rush made me wanna gourge my eyes out.. Robin Williams made it barable.. but what was up with the storyline, could it become more predictable? Eoz, shut up. Okay, command obeyed. Lol.

Yeah, if you want a movie that you won't be able to predict, Hard Candy is for you .. someone else has already recommended it, and I'm just here to confirm its awesomeness.

C'mon, I loved Tropic Thunder. The Wrestler was also very very good, and I'm trying to remember what happened to me that I forgot to include it in my original list. Anyway, keep the suggestions coming; I am following them.
