So I'm writing what's basically a Star Wars adaptation of Les Mis and I'm not sure to do with my Javert character. So the revolutionaries are a rebel cell, backed by the larger Rebellion (who've sent two commanders to lend assistance) and whose allies include two rebel generals whose fleets are above the planet to prevent an orbital bombardment, Saw Gerrera's group (but not Saw himself since this takes place at the same time as Rogue One,) Enfys Nest's group (including Enfys,) Hondo Ohnaka, and a four-man squad of Pengauani commandos. (You can look that up on Wookieepedia but it's more or less exactly what you're thinking of.) This army is led by an Imperial University student named Onjol Ros, who's playing by the rules of the Alliance. That means they don't execute prisoners. You may already see the problem here. In Les Mis, there's a powerful moment where Valjean volunteers to execute Javert personally, but secretly lets him go free instead, and gives him his address so he can arrest him after the battle. It's tricky to recreate that when the rebels don't believe in executing people. I'm not sure what to do here.
That's either the dumbest idea I've ever heard of or the most brilliant. That's all I got. Good luck!
Would it work to have the inteaction negate a lesser threat? Perhaps he could have a desperate need to remain on his own planet but the rebellion wants to take him from it and imprison him on a distant planet?
I considered something along those lines. The Rebellion has a secret facility hidden in space called Sunspot Prison. Com (my Valjean character) would know the experience of prison firsthand and want to spare Koss (my Javert character) from the same fate. But there's a couple big problems with that. One, SSP is probably somewhere remote in the Outer Rim and it'd take a long time to get there from the planet this takes place on, which is in the Core. And if Com volunteers to escort Koss there to prevent him from reaching that destination, he won't be present when the rebels lose the battle. And there's not a good way to fake Koss being sent away. The Alliance would notice fast that he wasn't put into their custody. But that has given me an idea. What if Koss is confident he'll be rescued as soon as the Empire breaches the rebels' defenses, but then two Star Destroyers emerge from hyperspace and begin bombing the place instead? Com will see that Koss is about to die and he can take him into the sewers to save his life. After the escape, Com can allow Koss to arrest him, only to turn around and discover Koss has left. It's a fairly big departure from the source material, but I welcome those as long as it doesn't completely throw the story off track.
