    Howdy!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by A-Frame, Jun 15, 2008.

I stumbled onto this site while looking for some new methods for character development, and could see that it was a good place to be. It'll be good to have a site to visit that actually promotes doing something constructive. I have a bad habit of wasting time when I should be doing other things.

A little about myself I guess? I'm from Oklahoma, I like to write (obviously). I majored in History in college so I figure I've got a couple thousand pages under my belt already, though what I really want to try my hand at is fiction. I've always thought that I had some novels in me, and I'm currently working on one that's been dying to be put down on the page for over a year now.

Anyway, I look forward to getting to meet some of you and checking out all that this community has to offer!

    Hi there!
Good for you - not many people actually make the effort to write down anything they think up. It's always a good sign if your ideas are fighting to be put down on paper. :)
If you give good, thorough reviews on two pieces in the review section, you'll be able to post some of your own work for review (if you feel up to it, that is).
    Good luck!

Hello A-Frame, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Thanks for the kind words. It's slow going in the beginning. I've sat at my computer all day and managed to type about two paragraphs. That gives me about four pages total. I have a pretty good idea of where I want the story to go, I just haven't quite decided how I want to get there. Also I re-write as I go too, so that doesn't help it move very fast. I'm hoping to get a substantial chunk of it churned out before I go back to school in August, so we'll just have to see how that goes.

Thanks to everyone for your welcome. This is a really great place to be, and seems like it could turn out to be an invaluable resource.
