Hello. I'm Don. Wanted to say hey as I join Writing.com. Things are kind of overwhelming as I see all the site has to offer so I'm working my way through. I'm from Cascade, Iowa. Have lived here since 2016. I spent my previous years living in the Earlville area about 30 miles north of Cascade. Both towns are located in eastern Iowa, about a half hour from the Mississippi. I've been a writer since 1995. 20 of those years were spent covering Iowa high school sports. From 2005 to '16, I was proud to work for two fine weekly newspapers in the Dyersville Commercial and Cascade Pioneer. My interests include studying history (especially from the Great Depression through Watergate), the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Bengals, British television from Doctor Who to As Time Goes By, pro wrestling (a wonderful form of storytelling), long walks, volleyball and watching YouTube. I'm pretty introverted and my sense of humor takes some getting used to. But I can be extroverted when people encourage me to and I'm pretty sure I'll make you giggle at some point of time. There are other things I'd like to tell you, but I don't wish to be overly wordy. If there's anything else you'd like to know please ask as I would be happy to talk with you. Oh, I almost forgot, two other interests of mine are Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss. They're neato. It's nice to meet you all and I hope to take part in many discussions with you.
Welcome! I'm Iain, one of the mods here. If you haven't had a chance to yet, be sure to check out New Member Quick Start and Forum Rules, and don't be shy about contacting me or one of the other mods (jannert, big soft moose, minstrel, and EFMingo) if you have any questions or problems. You'll need to have two weeks' membership, twenty posts (which include two constructive critiques of others' writing) before you can post in the Workshop for critique of your own work, but until then, feel free to poke around and jump into any one of the numerous discussions that are ongoing here. Those initial requirements will fly by. A sportswriter, huh? I don't believe we have anyone here with a similar background, so that's really cool. I don't follow anything other than sumo, but I'm sure your expertise will come in handy for someone, and you'll definitely find other history buffs and fans of the Doctor here. So anyway, have a look around, don't be shy about jumping into anything ongoing, and I look forward to seeing you around the forums.
Well, with the Bengals, I expect it within five years. Joe Burrow 4Life. ' Thank you. It's nice to meet you.
You know, its funny, of all the people I've met on this website, i just realized not one of them (that I know of) is a journalist. I bet working for those two papers for ten years gave you a ton of interesting stories for inspiration!... or humourous tales at the least
It's a nice to meet you, Steve. I'll share this to start. I love volleyball. The program I covered was successful and its coaches became some of my best friends. But there was one thing which always annoyed me and that was the girls' attitudes when they had to play in a Saturday tournament which was on the same day as the Homecoming dance. Bless all of you who raised teenage girls because I don't know how you put up with them every day of the year. A whole day of them being pissy, not understanding they're there, so they might as make the most of it. These were tournaments full of talented teams so I was curious to see where the girls stood against them. But nope, they weren't doing that because it was Homecoming. What really annoyed me was they couldn't through their heads I wasn't at these tourneys to cover them-with the exception of post-season, we only covered home events in person. I was there because I wanted to support them. Some of the moms (trust me, Dads didn't go to Saturday tourneys) were upset with their daughters' attitudes. Bot other were like, "Oh, I know, honey. It's so unfair. They don't understand you're popular and you have your social life." There was one year (one!) out of ten where we didn't have to put up with that. The 2013 girls were like, "We've got like four hours to get ready after we get home. Lets have fun today."
