    Hello everyone!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by _Lulu_, May 26, 2011.

    Hi,

I found this site through Google and I'm glad I did! This is what I need right now to be honest.
I've written a few short stories, not to be published, just for competition entries. I also write poetry, which is again, not to be published but for my own personal belonging. I find it helps situations, calming and an escape. I have however written one poem for a competition and this is the only poem I have allowed people to read.

BUT, what I'm here for is, Novel writing.
I have quite a few stored up in my mind and the one I want to work on first I have been getting down onto paper. I have the main plot and some characters. Now, the problem I'm having is:
    Daytime - Blank mind.
    Night time - Overloaded mind.

So I'm hoping to get some tips from you guys and I don't feel so alone now after reading through some of the threads.

I look forward to making some new friends and reading all the help and advice you have here :)

Welcome :) I hope you'll get what you aspire. I'm a new member myself and I've already stumbled upon some very good reviews and tips.

It requires some good experience with story writing to be able to write a full fledged novel. So I think you should go down the path of short-story writing, and allow people to review those bits before you actually begin writing your first novel. Just so you'd get enough confidence in your ability to express in written form.

(Of course, novel writing is essentially different from short story writing. It is a lot more demanding and requires other creative processes such as world, character and plot building)

Hello Lulu, Welcome to the Creative Writing Forums.

Please read How to Use the Writing Workshop before you try to post there. Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here anyway. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Writing Workshop, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Writing Workshop, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. We also impose a two-week waiting period before you may post writing for critique, to give you time to become familiar with what is expected and how the site operates. The Writing Workshop forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Writing Workshop forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out the RPG forum for improvisational fiction. Also try our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

Thanks for welcoming me guys :)

    Hi,

Thanks for your advice and tips, I'll have a look at writing workshop for sure. I'm not planning to post any of my writing though well if I do, it won't be for a long time yet, not until I become familiar with the members here and it's contents if at all.
Anything I have posted previously in other places I don't plan to get published so I'm not worried about those being public.

This is actually the first writing forum I've joined so I'm happy I found it. I've been reading through various threads, some that I can relate too so it has already helped in just the few hours I've been here :)

I think as my mind is fully relaxed when I go to bed that's when all the dialogues come to me. I had a notebook, pen and my phone light the other night lol.

Thanks again, I look forward to learning so much more being here :)

    Hi,
my problem is also that I feel like writing mostly in the night. It sucks but I think that the best way to fight it is to do something related to what you're writing so that you feel like writing about it. I usually try talking to my friends on messenger and then the inspiration comes.

So it indeed seems like you need to constantly feed your mind so that you have something to put into your novel.

Anyways, I hope to see your work around. Might be interesting.
