who here can speak another langauge?? i am in the middle of learning French at the moment and even with the help of a translator i am still struggling. i don't get it much like, it is doing my head in, lol. anyways, i wanna know who can speak another langauge other than their native one. ~ Heather

Because it is a necessary component of school curriculum. Many people speak English in Pakistan, even illiterates know words like 'Yes', 'No', 'Thank You' and 'Fish'.

I got French and German 'A'-levels. I don't know if that counts as "speaking" them. (Banzai, it's "ein kleines Bißchen". )
Damn. I can never get adjective endings right. And I thought I had put double s (since I couldn't manage to sort out the scharfes S).
I took 1 year of German, 2 years of Spanish, and 2 years of Latin in high school. I'm not fluent in any of them, but I do know a little here and there in them. I've used German a bit more than the others, mostly in reading it when I was a chemist (some important reference volumes were in German only, like Beilstein's Handbuch der Organischen Chemie). And high school was a long time ago...
I have been studying English and Russian in school for years, but I am not really able to speak them, because so far life has offered me too little opportunities to use them actively. I can read and write pretty well in English, to a lesser extent also in Russian (I just started to read shorter prose in Russian, so I hope I will improve soon), but there is still much to learn, and I don't think I will ever be able to claim fluency in those languages before I have not spent a considerable amount of time in countries where they are spoken.
I can trudge my way through most european languages, I think I understood what Banzai said. I know rudimentary Japanese because I watch the occasional anime and kinda like how the language sounds. Though some words are inane, and they're lazy (seriously, they abbreviate everything. And most of their loanwords are horribly mangled Engrish, Portuguese and dutch. nice looking letters though. Nice flow for hiragana at least, katakana is a bit stiff. Korean looks like robot speak. But that's a different story) I also know a teensy bit of latin, but again that's because of the common root. J'ai pris les classes françaises pendant deux années. I still had to use a translator to figure out that sentence... I don't even remember learning the word pendant... then again, I didn't like the teacher... I bet I could learn it on my own better... PROTIP: when learning a language, treat every word like a synonym of the English word. Wont help you pronounce it, but it helps a little when learning it. Maybe.
I'm terrible with languages, but I'm trying to learn Chinese. Now I just need to find out if the classes I signed up for are actually occurring. I can understand some words if I read them in Spanish, Latin, German, and French, but its not easy for me.

I 'speak' one that's not been listed here yet. Bristish Sign Language. Well worth learning if you ever get the chance. I'd love to learn cornish too, being my own supposed tongue but I can't afford the lessons. I did French back in school as well. I'd like to be able to study cuniform too for some strange reason. The mysteries of life eh?

I study French and Spanish at the moment and would consider myself to be proficient in both, but not fluent really... I can understand most European languages if i try, like when Banzai talks to me in German - i understand that.
