hello there... liam here. i've been a member of this wonderful site since febuary, but i've had very little input so far due to the fact that im in the middle of a looming and chillingly nasty exam year and all the rest of that rot. i just saw this now, so i said i'd belatedly attempt a heavy handed "introduction". so yes, hello. on my page at the moment, i do have a few very short samples of some of my writing in the blog, if it takes anyone's fancy. actually, the style i used in those blogs have been left behind by me recently in a bold and dangerous attempt to persue the great "plot"...but i entered them in some short story competitions recently and they didn't disgrace me, so... during the summer i intend to cycle through france, switzerland and italy, so i'm sure that my ill-advised adventures and arse sores will provide much scope for interesting writing. then after that....a journalism course in limerick university, as i am passionate about the written word. unfortunatley, many have decried my descision to follow this path, as the newspaper industry has seen quite a dramatic and nasty decimation recently. i'd love if those with experience on this matter could get back to me about it, and please let loose if you choose to do so. eh, i'll probably end up doing it anyways. my future as a frustrated and greasy chain smoker stuck in a windowless and dour apartment somewhere in the midst of the urban jungle of dublin certaintly looks bright. hooray. my favourite writers include: hemingway, orwell, faulkner, golding, (look how predictable i am!), hunter s. thompson, robert fisk, john mcgahern, norman mailer, patrick kavanagh, virginia woolf, william trevor, kerouac (seeing the original on the road scroll has to be a life highlight), ian mcewan, irvine welsh....etc. so thanks a million for reading...to the ...1 or 2 still here..... bye
Hi and welcome "my future as a frustrated and greasy chain smoker stuck in a windowless and dour apartment somewhere in the midst of the urban jungle of dublin certaintly looks bright. hooray." - now there's a good quote! haha. hope you enjoy your cycle, as much as it's possible..
Hello Liam, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
Hi from An Longfort! As "decimation" means losing one tenth, it can't be that bad! Good luck in your studies. As for the cycling, well, I wish I had a fraction of your energy and stamina.
