    Animal-ish names?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Adam Bolander, Apr 26, 2021.

In my WIP, there is a race if shapeshifters living apart from humanity in the forests. I want to give them names that sound like ones people living in the wilderness might use. Descriptive ones, kind of like old Native American names, you know what I mean? Here's what I have so far and what I still need. What do you guys think?

A gray wolf named Stormcloud Fang (Storm for short)

A gray and red fox named Glowing Cinders (Cinder for short)
^at first I was going to call this one Ember, but I didn't want to confuse people since I have another character named Amber.

An owl named Silent Wings (Silent or Silence for short)

A child squirrel named Acts Without Thinking (Act or Ax)

A young rabbit named Leaps Without Looking (Leap)

The ones I haven't decided on are...

    A mountain goat.

    A grizzly bear.

A whitetail deer (male, preferably referencing his antlers)

In Turkish, names all have a literal meaning e.g. Ayşe comes from "ay ışığı" = moonlight.
So I would keep the names as straight descriptors. You don't want them to be like cliches.
