    So, pretty much everyone does it. It's a staple of social communication now.

    Now how exactly do we apply it to writing?

    Like how do you mean? Is there an imperative to use it because it's ubiquitous? I'd say no unless it elevates the writing and fits stylistically. I don't think just because that's how most people communicate now it should replace dialogue as a narrative standard. But clearly characters don't need to be physically present to communicate with each other or use the telephone, which classically has usually been formatted like regular dialogue and wasn't much different on the page.
