    Making an effort in 2021

Discussion in 'General Writing' started by Millamber, Dec 7, 2020.

Just dropping by to say hello again to the Forum, after deciding this week that as I have barely written anything or a year or two, and having massively let myself down and failed in alot of aspects in my life in 2020, I have committed to focusing more on my creativity in 2021.

Firstly with my photography (I've set myself a few challenges here), and my writing. The challenge for 2021..... an obvious but difficult one. Write 2,000 words a week, so that at the end of 2021, at the v.latest, I have 100,000 written.

I'm looking forward to it, and already daunted, on the basis I have no real idea/plot/world drawn up and no major characters.
I think I will spend December with my favourite movies on in the background (LotR), whilst brainstorming, designing characters, and hoping something comes to me!

Hope everyone is keeping safe in these difficult times.

I think 2k words per week is a very reasonable goal. And the more of a routine you establish the easier it is to stick with it. Good luck!

2020 was a donut hole for me. Anything in 2021 would be an improvement.

Thank you :) It's a target I'm happy I set, but the fact I have literally nothing to start on/with, makes it all a bit more daunting to me. I'm considering doing the same as Phillip Pullman did for 'His Dark Materials' and just start writing off the cuff, and see what comes from it!

That's what I thought/was hoping! I am fortunate that I'm quite fast on a keyboard, so 2,000 isn't a massive amount of words (not saying they'll be good ha!), but I should be able to sit down one night or one early morning and do a minimum of 2,000 over the course of a week. It also means if I am ill/on holiday, or otherwise delayed, I can catch up the following week!

From memory, I believe you used to/still.. run restaurants? I presume you were massively affected by this whole COVID thing? I have been fortunate to work from home, so it isn't so much that 2020 was a donut hole for me, more that I now resemble more and more, a donut :( Lets hope we both make improvements in 2021!
