    Comma Conundrum

    versus
    Is the comma optional? Would the second sentence be grammatically incorrect?

    I'd go for the second.

    With the first it is an unnecessary pause.

    First is more easily read, to me. If a comma makes it clearer, then go for it.

    'when he wasn't working out' is an adverbial clause, so properly takes a comma...

    I think they're both right, but the second one flows better.

    I prefer the second. Also your poetic license allows for gramatically incorrect ideas.
