    Your Favorite Holiday

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Snoopingaround, Sep 6, 2011.

Out of all of the holidays that are celebrated by humanity, which is your favorite? This can include religious holidays, cultural celebrations (like Kwanzaa), as well as even government holidays. Memorable experiences and personal stories from those special days are also welcome...

Christmas is mine. I suspect it would be halloween if we celebrated that here.

In Australia, Christmas is in summer. We have BBQs and go to the beach--very different to the traditional northern christmas.

Christmas, definitely Christmas. I was just talking about this the other day with a friend actually - I suddenly become this extremely happy, more tolerant than usual person in the weeks before Christmas.

I'm really excited this year, because although I will be coming home for actual Christmas week, I'll be spending the weeks up to it in London, and in my mind, it will be magical. Christmas shopping on Oxford Street (admittedly, window shopping), and the HUGE tree, and hopefully snow - I'm getting excited again just thinking about it

^ I went "shopping" in Oxford street last Christmas and the atmosphere really was magical.

Christmas is my favourite holiday too. It's an exciting feeling that lasts all month.

^^I am so excited now! Childish I know, but I really want to go to Hamleys around Christmas time - I'd feel like I was in Miracle on 34th Street

Halloween. Christmas used to be my favorite holiday when I was little... the combination of not believing in Santa anymore and getting lamer presents, plus the constant advertising and commercialism, has made me sad.

Halloween and Christmas. I'm really excited for Halloween this year because for the past few years I've either been away at school or in a neighborhood that didn't get trick-or-treaters. Now I'm in a new, much bigger city with a lot more to do, so even if I end up having to work that night or staying at home handing out candy, I'll still be doing *something.*

I did not know that Australians didn't celebrate Halloween. One of the great things about forums like these is that you can learn alot of things almost every time you visit.

Halloween. Any excuse to dress up in costumes, party, and watch horror movies works for me.

Christmas. It's the only time I get to see my niece and nephew. And I love going back to Canada for a week at that time - SNOW! I've been living in Southern California for too long, I guess. I miss the feel of the seasons. As The Band once sang, "Set my compass north, I've got winter in my blood."

Mine is Thanksgiving. I love Christmas and Halloween, too, but Thanksgiving was always the day that centered around hanging out with my family, and it was awesome. Even last year, when my husband ended up working so we couldn't drive down to visit our families, I spent the entire day on Skype with my family. :)

I would have to say Christmas. Not because of the presents, but because I like being home with my family in front of a roaring fire with the snow bounding us inside. It's a time of peace and tranquility. A time we get to really think about the past year and be greatful for all we have and those who are with us. It's just a time we get to rest.

Every year I set out to find the most ridiculous costume available. Halloween takes the cake.

I have to go with Halloween as well, but for different reasons. I never really celebrate any holidays or birthdays. The reason I like Halloween is the shopping, every year I find one or two cheesy items to buy. Last year was a pretty realistic looking plastic skeleton. He is about two feet tall and sits by my writing desk. The year before I found a candle lantern that is shaped like an owl. I guess I am the type that loves a little creepy around the house, all year long.

This. Halloween is also in October, which is a nice fall atmosphere -- not summer hot, but not December snow, either.

I think my favorite holiday to celebrate is the Day of the Dead. But Christmas follows close behind. I like the Dia de los Muertos because I feel close to my dead loved ones then. I don't know what happens when people die, but the Day of the Dead allows me to do a physical ritual to reinforce the idea that the dead aren't really gone, which makes me feel a little closer to them.

I love Christmas because of all the food and the lights. I used to love looking at the Christmas lights at night. They look like faeries. I love cooking and being with family, also.

I would like to see the Indian Holi festival because it is so colorful. Also, I really like the various lantern festivals in Asia, they are beautiful and magical.

I mainly like Halloween (excuse to watch horror movies and play horror games) and Christmas (for obvious reasons).

Others seem to have Christmas covered, so my other favourite holiday is a Bank Holiday. I always forget they're coming up, so on the Friday before (or sometimes even the Sunday before) when someone reminds me that I'm off on the Monday I am *elated*. Obviously I always end up squandering these days by lazing around the house eating rubbish and watching bad tv, but that's the fun of them in my opinion :D

Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday, especially now that it's just me and my mom. I really enjoy cooking with her, with the parade on TV in the background - it's just such a cozy atmosphere. And that's around the time it stops being a billion degrees here in Phoenix, which is a plus.

Christmas used to be my favorite, but now all the excitement just kind of died out. Also, this year I'm going to be totally on my own, since my mom is visiting her family on the east coast, but I'm staying home (long story). So I guess I'm just gonna be hanging around watching Harry Potter or something. Possibly baking. Probably baking.

Well, I'm not sure. I don't think I have a favourite really. Christmas is good because I'm always with my family and it's nice to be together and have a big meal and do all the typical Christmas related things. Bank Holidays because it's a day off from school/work/uni so it's nice to have a break and relax for the day. Easter because I like going on a treasure hunt for Easter eggs, and it's awesome that my mum still does it for us even though me and my siblings are 18-22years old. :)
