In my next project I plan to poke fun at a particular series of RPG. A common running gag will be characters making observations they wouldn't otherwise make. For example upon meeting the emperor who's ambiguously evil (as in not clear if he's really evil or not) having a character question 'Are you SURE you're not being controlled by a demon' with the answer being 'please just follow the script' It won't happen often, but possibly often enough that it (might) annoy a genre savvy reader. Granted I intend to make it perfectly clear that the tale is satirical in nature on outset. The story description will explain that it is not meant to be taken seriously at any point. Though I'm still working out how to word that so that it doesn't disengage the reader instantly. I also plan to use chapter names like "Backstory Prologue that unexpectedly becomes Relevant at the End" And yes, I'm aware of the Cringe in that, but that's kind of ribbing I intend to do. Another chapter will be called "Inciting Incident Festival" and the joke here is that nothing horrible happens despite a character jokingly referring to the festival in this manner. (It's a pretty common trope in RPG's, especially square Enix) Basically what I'm asking, how self aware could I make the characters before it gets annoying.
I think it sounds funny. But I don't play such games and don't know much about them, so I'm not the target audience.
It's a different style of parody than one of my other projects to be sure. The other project is going to be more Shameless Deadpool style self awareness, this one is toned down quite a lot. It's more making fun of what kind of plots you can 'get away with' in an RPG. I'd recommend Tales Of if you want to get into RPG's.
My computer cannot even run the newer Minecraft snapshots I would have to update it first, before I could play anything.
I think it sounds cool, but it does depend on the tone of the story. I voted for yes on your pole but we need a "sometimes" or "it depends" answer added to the mix.
I mean the tone is practically Bi polar lol The theme is overcoming the stages of grief, quite literally since the villains are personifications of the five stages. Some of the bosses the party fights are literary references (The hound of the Baskervilles is the fire temple boss) while others are meme related. Hell the thing that summoned Elder gods to begin with is a meme. The tricky part will be balancing the more serious subject matter with the more jokey stuff. The 'prologue chapter that's only relevant in the last leg of the game' chapter will be showing at least PART of the 'off screen war' which is one common trope in especially square enix games. I'd edit the pole but I don't think I can.
