Discussion in 'Character Development' started by Celia., Dec 2, 2010.

ever changed a whole novel or short story to first person? What do you prefer when writing/reading?

I prefer whatever works best for that particular story.

It depends entirely on the story.
I wrote a short story in third person because that's how it flowed out for me, but when it was workshopped I was told to do it in first person which actually worked out better.
I tend to write in first person usually, and usually prefer to read when it's written in first person too, but it's all subjective to the story.
If you're asking this because you're considering changing a short story or novel to first person, then I would experiment and write the story or a chapter in first person and see which works better.

I actually did the write the end chapter in first person and I was amazed on how much better it was.

I don't think I could be bothered. Changing it after the fact, I mean.

I might try writing something in first person. Short story maybe.

Funny how simply changing the perspective can improve a piece so much.

Yes I wrote my second novel third person past tense instead of my usual first person present tense.

I changed it back because of two scenes that would have been different - plus was asked to by people that had read the first novel.

I write my stories in 1st person perspective. I always have, and always will. I think the 1st person view is better than 3rd person. It sounds boring to me to read a story in 3rd person perspective, because it yanks me away from walking in the shoes of the main character.

i ditto dig in re what i write...

as for reading, i much prefer third, but if something is well written and it's a good, compelling story, i hardly notice if it's in first...
