Jumping on the back of 'first three sentences' thread, I thought this might be interesting. Just give a few details of settings, and a focus point. Here is mine, Set in 2664, an industrial Russian city, winter. My focus is a plant.
Opening scene is in a nightclub (Club Eternity) where Cupid and the last remaining Greco-Roman personalities hang out and sow chaos in the lives of mortals. The front door opens into New York's East Village and the rear door into the ruins of Olympus, where Cupid often goes and reminisces about his long departed god friends. But not Venus/Aphrodite (his hell on wheels mother) who would like nothing more than to reclaim Earth and turn Cupid back into her naughty little cherub. Shameless plug: this is based on a short I did for the forum contest here: https://www.writingforums.org/threads/homer-potvin-wins-the-february-contest.151034/
The main character wakes up under a dead tree with no memory of where he is and how he got there, the grass and plants around where he's lying is dead, the sky above is dead and fog is rolling in.
Here's mine: Set in the 1920s in New York. Main character, who is an immortal female investigator vampire, is trying to fight off a suspected criminal in an alleyway, but ends up dying (again) and the criminal gets away.
Present Day, medium-small town about an hour's drive outside of Richmond, VA. My protagonist is robbing a bank while his three friends are robbing two others.
Present Day, the Chicago Opera House. On the first night of Spring, Bartlett (my MC) prepares herself to perform the role of the Sacrificial Dancer in the ballet 'Rite of Spring' when she suddenly reads a News Article about a murder in her hometown.
Late 2715, in a small Uldivarion Empyreal mult-purpose Military vessel. Colixia sits nervously as her feet dangle above the floor, next to her is Hypp'nn (an Uldivarion Armor Pilot) (point of ref Colixia is 5 ft 7, and the average Uldivarion is 8 ft). They are heading ahead of the Centurian and Empyreal Warships in advance to Mars, to negotiate safe passage and investigate an enemy base on the opposite of the planet from Melas Chasma.
Late afternoon towards the end of a cool summer, in the cultural precinct of a small city, on the edge of a college campus at the end of an open day, while straggling prospective students are still milling around. I'll probably come up with something stronger, but for now starting here is a way of concretising how the main character is lost at a junction.
A few years in the future, beginning of summer, in a large South Dakota house. The MC is sitting in the dining room, not eating his cereal, and staring blankly at a newspaper. His best friend is dead, and it's on the front page.
A team of astronauts land near the site of what is supposed to be a failed extrasolar colony, only to discover the 'colony' is larger than most cities on Earth despite existing for only 70 years. The astronauts move towards the city to try and establish contact. They are gunned down.
