introductions to novels?... are you including prefaces and prologues?... or only what are actually labeled 'introduction'?... sorry, i can't say i ever even notice them, much less to the point where i'd remember them or have any favorites...
There are many great opening lines--part of what makes them great is their cohesion to the story. They hint to not only what the story will be about but also the tone and attitude. In other words, they are a perfect opining for that story. The perfect opining line for your story will in found after you know it better: after you have written a fair bit of it. So, work on your story and let the opining line come when it will. one of the better hard boiled detective story opining lines is: “When I finally caught up with Abraham Trahearne, he was drinking beer with an alcoholic bulldog named Fireball Roberts in a ramshackle joint just outside of Sonoma, California, drinking the heart right out of a fine spring afternoon.” —James Crumley, The Last Good Kiss.
If we are talking about opening lines, my all time favourite is: "The year I began to say vahz instead of vase, a man I barely knew nearly accidentally killed me." ("The Harvest" - Amy Hempel)
I thought he meant posts new members here use to introduce themselves. I gathered that when he said he wanted to rewrite his. I could very easily be wrong, though - the original post isn't clear.
