Grrr....just saw this again. Drives me nuts!

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by jannert, Oct 21, 2017.

When did so many people start using the word 'breath' when they actually mean 'breathe?' Aaargh. Don't folks know the difference?

Breath is a noun. Breathe is a verb. Aaargh....

    You take a deep breath.

You do not breath deeply. You breathe deeply.

Aaargh. Why is this mistake suddenly creeping in everywhere? They aren't even pronounced the same.

Guess someone is getting lazy, when all they had to do was add an 'E'.
Have not come across this issue, but it has to be noted considering
they are not the exact same thing, as you have pointed out.

I have to admit, I never use 'breathe'. I use 'breath' as a verb all the time. In fact, I didn't even know 'breathe' was a word o_O

It's just that I never saw this happening before, and now I see it everywhere, even on well-written blogs, etc. I wondered if it was some auto-correct thing.

I think one reason could be that 'breath' isn't going to get flagged by spell-check software.

Could it also be one of those words that has now evolved so that either spelling is now accepted? I know they're pronounced differently, but like I say, I've never ever used 'breathe'.

I used to do the same thing with cloth and clothe all the time because I'd honestly forget which one meant which.

Choose and chose. I always have to double check that one within the context of the sentence.

Double-plus 1,000. I'm all for the evolution of language, but if we go down that route we might as well decide that your is an acceptable spelling for you're. *shudders*

I wouldn't have guessed that she was a Marine at all.

I'm also not against the English language growing and changing but if we could help it, I'd prefer we limit those changes to things that make it less, rather than more, complicated.

Yes, typos sometimes explain these things.

    No. Just no.

Mistakes happen. Now you know so you can quit upsetting @jannert. ;)

    That's a joke in case it wasn't clear. :)

Correcting 'breath' to 'breathe' is by far the most common adjustment I make when proofreading anything I've ever written

Its from the days when we only had 10 keys and multiple presses, using numbers was easier the circling through the options, theres no excuse for it in the days of touchscreen keyboards and autocomplete.

Phone to phone fairy muff but not in ebay adverts or the like " 1chnc 2 buy my L33t motr" no ,fuck off ... how is your car 'elite' anyway (unless its a lotus)

I once started a short story where one character spk nly text spk .. but had to give it up because it was painful to read

You left off my question mark.

But, lacking an answer, I looked it up.

    Leet speak

I like it, much more interesting answer than I might have gotten here if someone just answered, "elite speak":
Cool, sorry for the thread hijack, @jannert.
