    Interrupting dialogue

Discussion in 'Dialogue Development' started by ThenColmSaid, Nov 13, 2017.

Does anybody know how to punctuate when another character finishes another character's sentence?
I know when a character continues speaking after they've been interupted that you cut what they previously say with an em dash and then start off with another one if they carry on saying what they were saying after the interruption, I just wasn't sure what to do if for another character says it. Is it either:

    e.g 1)

    'But she's—'
    '—dead, yes.'

    or example 2)

    'But she's—'
    'Dead, yes.'

This is how I do it. It's clearer than your second example, and clarity is always good. :)
