I’m (probably) the most sentimental writer you’ll ever meet

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by ATL98, Mar 13, 2025.

Hello all, my name is Tommy, and that title is honestly the best way I can introduce myself. I am a full on hopeless romantic and a lot of my writings, no matter what topic I write about, always tend to have a very sentimental type of feeling to them. I don’t generally write straight up romance stuff though, I usually like to pair it with sci-fi, noir / crime, and psychological thriller. One thing I need to say right off the bat though is that a lot of my writings lately are more like movie synopses; they basically just describe the plot (albeit in a lot of detail, like close to 2000 words) from beginning to end. I don’t really know where I would post that kind of stuff, as it’s not exactly a written out story, but nor is it a movie script. Any guidance here would be greatly appreciated!

Anyway, I have already been reading through y’all’s stories and you guys are great writers, I enjoyed everything I read so far and look forward to seeing what else you’ve got, as well as potentially sharing my own stuff.

Hello @ATL98 and welcome to the forum.

I can empathise with your sentimentality. I'm also a sentimental writer, although my stories tend towards unrequited or unfulfilled and poignant love, because, reasons.

As far as your stories are concerned, who are you writing for? Are you writing for yourself (and there's nothing wrong with that), or are you writing for other people to read? Is what you are writing now ultimately what you want to write, or do you want to develop further?

    Hello and welcome!

I'm super sentimental with my stories too. I think I write for myself, more so than others. So I can empathize with you on that. They're your creation, it's not a bad thing to love them as such.

As far as where you'd post that, gosh, I really couldn't say. Sounds closest to movie scripts, if not quite ready yet. Perhaps read a few movie scripts and a few stories in your chosen genre and see which seems closer and try to give the necessary tweaks to fit them into a category.

Either way, welcome to the forums.

Oh believe me, I’m right there with you on the melancholy / unrequited thing. In that sense my writing probably tends to reflect my own experience more, but I also always have that optimistic side trying to balance it out.

I’m pretty happy with the styles I write in, though I’m always looking to get better at them, of course. I would say I write for myself, and also to share with others, but it usually just ends up being for myself since I’ve never managed to get much of an audience. I do enjoy any opportunities I get for others to read my stuff though.

Thanks for the encouraging words, really appreciate that! I definitely look forward to sharing some of my stuff too and checking out more from you guys.

Yeah, I think we’re definitely on the same page there. For me, I’ve gotta follow my heart when I’m writing, wherever that leads. So that’s probably why I mostly end up writing for myself, even though I always like to get thoughts from others.

As for the not-quite scripts, yeah, the closest comparison I can come up with is that they’re basically like the movie synopses you see on Wikipedia, but a lot more detailed. They’re not fully written out scenes or scripts. I might give a shot at actually writing a scene out to give y’all an idea of what it’s about. Thanks for the advice!
