I'm going to try and have a good writing weekend. I've got a few short stories to go through. But, of course, there's a new one that maybe I'll just see through this weekend. I'm totally in love with this story, though, not not sure where it's going or what it's actually about. I'm just over 1k words in. I'm aiming for between 3k to 5k words. It would be cool if I could get this written and revised and polished by the end of the weekend. I think it's doable, but I know it will be a lot of work. My goal is to submit it to a journal by Monday. I know it could seem like this is some sort of rush job, but I guarantee it's not with what I have and will put into this piece. Plus, I'm excited about this one, and I haven't been excited about anything in a really long time. Anyone else in for a weekend dedicated to writing? Do you ever give yourself weekend specific goals? Let's do this! *** Hey, I just wanted to add that it might be fun if any of you want to try and write a short story in a weekend, too. I started mine tonight. But, of course, anyone can join in with anyone. I just feel it might help productivity if more than just one of us (me) was aiming for that here.
Yep, I'm in. Already decided to write my ass off this weekend! It's a long one here as Monday is Canadian Thanksgiving. I want to make more progress on the novel, get a piece ready for the October short story contest here, and maybe bang out a flash piece for the .com contest if I happen to be blessed with an idea soon. I also have The First Line still there in the back of my mind. Hoping for some inspiration ! Happy to hear you're excited about your new piece. Wishing you the best for this writing weekend.
I have grand aspirations for a story for the monthly contest. It would be my first time entering. I’m about 1,000 in, currently, and shooting for 4,500-ish. But all of my recent efforts have had a nasty tendency of unraveling and stretching out into novelette territory.
Good luck! I'm planning to try and get around 5k done this weekend too. I'm no good during the week, but I reckon if I can maintain about 5k on the weekends and whatever I manage during the rest of the week, I might finish something by the end of the decade!
I didn't check in here yesterday, but I wrote another 1.5k words. My story is probably at the halfway point. It needs some cleaning up before I continue. My goal is still to finish the story this weekend. And I think it's doable because I just realized Monday is a holiday so I will be taking advantage of that. How is everyone else's writing going this weekend?
I've written 4.2K words since Friday, and I think I've finished editing a short story. Just about ready to get going on another writing session. Unfortunately no ideas for new stories have popped into my brain just yet. Sometimes it simply does not happen and I have to skip some of the contests.
I planned to work on my novel and my contest entry for October on the weekend but things kept piling one after the other! It was especially bad on Saturday. Our garden is unfortunately a mess. There's weeds everywhere. And when I say everywhere, I mean, at every inch. There's no grass. At all. So, I'm working on fixing it. Saturday was just me going around with a new lawnmower getting rid of all those weeds all day long. I collected six heavy trash bags of crushed weeds, which trust me, even with a mower, took many hours. I planned to work on my stories in the afternoon after I was finished, but exhaustion caught up with me, and I couldn't even keep my eyes open. Today I had other chores, and on Friday, I had coursework all day long. There's just no feasible time... but I'm hoping Monday will be better.
I'm tapping out early, mostly because I took Friday off. But I did have a very productive writing weekend! I've got 6.4K new words down, plus I did quite a bit of editing. I racked up about 17 hours of writing/editing over the 3 days. And that's enough! I already have a dumb full-time job I've got to get back to on Tuesday. Hoping you all have had a solid writing weekend, filled with positive vibes and little frustration or burnout.
Meh. I haven't written much in the last few years. Kind of bumming me out because I used to be really good at it, but it's just not rewarding like it used to be. 30 plus years without tangible results. For the first 25, it was its own reward, where accomplishment of finished pieces was all I needed. But then... I don't know. That hard work for its own reward kind of got replaced by music. Learning, studying, working, leveling up with regularity, setting achievable goals and hitting them. I don't know. I have this crazy creative artistic side that just needs an outlet, I think. Maybe I'll get sick of guitar in a few years and fill that back up with writing? It's the slog, grind, endless hours, pulling out my hair... too similar to work, maybe.
I completely relate to this. I find that I simply have to engage in creative endeavours. It's interesting that playing musical instruments and/or singing seems to be a thing that many writers seem to do. It makes sense. I also know of writers who paint and do crafts. Probably most such activities have an expiry date. I stopped playing in bands a long time ago and only play guitar and sing for fun and to keep myself in musical shape. It's the opposite for the writing now, which is fun in theory but absolutely feels like work in practice.
Yeah, that's definitely where I'm at. I hit it hard for a few years, which kind of burned me out. Tough to do recreationally, at least for me. Just need to find a way to make it fun again, I guess.
I think the contests keep things fun for me. Sure, sometimes I get zero votes, but that's rare. I usually get at least a few, and every now and again, I actually win one. If there are at least a few people enjoying what I'm writing, it does make me want to write some more. Probably what keeps me going the most these days is the occasional "good" rejection. Professional editors taking a minute to let me know that I'm not completely wasting my time, and that I might be on the verge of a breakthrough. They've got me chasing that dragon, at least for now !
I'm going to try again for a productive writing weekend. I would like to finish the story that I started last weekend. I haven't done anything with it since, but I think I left it in a good place. I would also like to finish revision for another story that has been done for a while and is close but not quite there yet. These two things will be a lot of work, but it needs to get done so I can start submitting these pieces. I do feel really good about both these stories, but I want to feel super great about them and have them polished up so much they shine. Anyone else have weekend writing plans?
I have to finish a script for a reenactment that's scheduled for early November and a script for a PP program that is scheduled roughly the same period. Finishing the script is scheduled for this weekend.
Not much coursework this weekend so I aim to work on my novel! Actually, I already did. I sat down for a bit and started chapter 2. Also going to work on a short story. By Monday, I want to have both the short story and the second chapter finished. Possibly even start the third...
I have yet to finish the rewrite of my first workshop submission, Dark. Plus, I had a terrible day at work today. Writing makes me happy, so I shall join in and set the goal to finish it and proofread it about a dozen times by the end of the weekend; it is cut short because I have to work one of my days off this weekend. I shall grab my wine and put on some Wagner! Lol Good luck out there
I had a good Friday start -- well, sort of. I only netted 229 words yesterday, but that's because I wrote 500, found a plot hole, reluctantly deleted my last 800 and soldiered on through another 500 before quitting. At least I didn't end up negative. I'm going to see if I can't knock out a few K today and tomorrow. I basically have close to 48 hours to do nothing but write, screw around on the computer and sleep when I want. The ratio of these three things will determine a good or bad writing weekend.
I admit I procrastinated a bit last night! Think my wine just relaxed me too much to focus. Did more proofing than actual writing. Thankfully had someone on here looking out (for lack of a better way of putting it at the moment lol) they shared some music with me that will absolutely help me to get the last 4 paragraphs rewritten. Then it's proofing away until it is in decent viewing shape! lol hope everyone else is having a good start!
Update: I haven't written anything all day. I'm about to get started, though. Hopefully. I'll get something done, at least, I'm sure. But tomorrow, I got roped into helping my parents move crap they don't want to pay the movers to move to their new house, So I'll be there all day, I'm sure. Oh well.
I wrote most of the afternoon. This project is taking for freaking ever. Normally I'd enjoy it more but the necessarily accelerated pace has taken the shine off the process.
Art under pressure does take some of the enjoyment out of it! Some progress is better than no progress! I am finally sitting down to finish this rewrite. I have about an hour or 2 of nothing to do, so now is the time for me to focus! lol
I finished the rewrite! Still has to be proofread a dozen times! However, I am at least satisfied with how the rewrite turned out and will post it once I have triple checked it ha-ha, I learn from my mistakes. Hope everyone else accomplished what they wanted for this round of writing weekend. If not, I hope you at least accomplished something, even if it is simply something, like successfully getting out of bed
