    Science Fiction Movie Marathon!

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by The Dapper Hooligan, Dec 2, 2018.

Inspired by BayView's thread on Artificial Gravity, I've decided to go on a Sci-Fi movie marathon. Of course, I'll have to start with the undisputed champion, The Last Starfighter, followed closely by Barbarella, and Flesh Gordon, but I'm more interested in what you'd recommend, seriously or otherwise, and why you recommend it.

Obvious as it may seem as an offer, the original ALIEN (1979).

It is perfection as a Sci-Fi horror film. A synergistic dynamic that I have yet to see matched in the genre with respect to an almost unscripted, cinéma vérité approach to engaging the crew, a perfect understanding of where fear really comes from, genuine fear, raw and unadulterated, and a compelling hero in the form of Ellen Ripley. Almost 40 years later, it remains a benchmark in my eyes.

ETA: And let's not forget that it contains the single most chilling, most disturbing death-scream in cinema history, delivered by Veronica Cartwright as Lambert. When the xenomorph's tail comes up between her legs, it lends an appalling layer of sexuality to what's happening that pulls you in two completely fucked-up directions at once. Horrible and effective.

If you're going to go with Alien, you have to watch the movie that it came from first: Dark Star.

On a more serious note, Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. I know I mentioned the sequel in that other thread, but 2010 pretty much sucked, so save yourself the time. I'm partial to Event Horizon, even though it's more horror than SF, it has some good tension building and atmospherics. The anime Akira is pretty good, nice and dark without any of the kawaii stupidity that one associates with my host country.

I loved the Scarlett Johannson / Luc Besson movie Eve even though it's about as scientifically accurate as Snow White. It's just got this Gibsonesque feel to it.

Enemy Mine (1985) for an excellent character-driven SF movie.

More later, brain is locked up temporarily.

Spaceballs. :D Good spoof movie. :p

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, is more drama/mystery, but it
is still technically Sci-fi. That and it is one of the better movies from the
    Originals.

Total Recall ( Schwarzenegger Version), it has lots of action, and a funny add
placement for sunblock on Mars, which would do fuck all there. :p

Logan's Run. is a fun adventure from the 70's, and is kinda on the Dystopian side.

Battlefield Earth is one you can make fun of, lord knows everyone else has. :p

The entire Star Wars saga, though that would give you an incredibly numb butt,
and you can decide on whether or not to watch the really bad holiday special
somewhere in between or at the end of the series. :p

E.T., after all it is a classic. Or you can substitute with the substandard ripoff
    Mac And Me.

Gravity, though I haven't seen it, I have heard mixed revs on it.

Interstellar wasn't bad, but it gets a little strange at the end.

Mars Attacks, cause it is just a bit of campy fun.

The first Star Trek Motion Picture, for V-ger. An evolved AI species, with entropy-numbing capabilities, tell me that ain't fun, no matter what Shitener did to it!
IA, I did like the bomb in Dark Star! My brother and I found opportunity to quote from that conversation for twenty years!
    LifeForce. Mathilda May, nuff said.
    Imposter.
The Thing (1985) Come on, I'd sit the whole movie, just to see the crab-legs and eyestalks!!
Alien Resurrectiom. Cool factor. Redemption for the stain of Alien 3 (WTF!).
X-Files Movie, maybe? What say the jury?
    The Fly (89?). Just... Brundle-Fly!
    Starship Troopers. Pure over-the-top value.
Doom. Heh heh. They did that right, as a one-off.
Starman. Get your bong and listen to the sound that glowing ball makes!
Terminator. T2. Dream sequences in both were awesome!
    Both Trons, maybe? Bong compatible.
ID4 (Orig). Boom! factor. HFS factor.
Orig. RoboCop. I'd buy that for a dollar!
I Come In Peace. Cause I have a Calico, nuff said.
    Predator, Predator2, and AVP.
Avatar. Living planet, battle tech, battle sequence. Unobtanium. I'll be watching it in my VR if nobody likes it.
    InnerSpace. humor
Close Encounters. So many reasons. Bong compatibility.
B5 - All of it, all week. Movies too. Time paradox prophesy. Shakesperean. Shadows - bong compatible.
Binge Firefly & Serenity, all day, maybe twice. "Two-by-two, hands of blue." River steals the show.

    PopcornTime, baby!

For real? ALIEN3 is no gem, I'll certainly give you that, but Resurrection is criminal... The dialogue breaks my brain, and it's got The Wynona™ desecrating the set. The scene where Ripley and Wynona-bot are in "the chapel" (why??) plugged into a computerized "bible" (again, why??), with ring-light reflections everywhere (this isn't The City of Lost Children, Jean Pierre!!) makes me want to go have unprotected sex with the nearest xenomorph drone.

Actually, no one saw it. The teaser trailer that came out for Alien Covenant that expressly makes it known that there is an ursine rainbow couple as part of the crew is the only place where that knowledge is given voice. In the film - had you not seen that teaser - they're just besties. :bigmeh:

Haha :) No. Just that none of the footage from the teaser is actually in the movie, which is oddly a thing that the franchise settled on in the prior film Prometheus, aka The Backstory We Never Asked For. That film also had a bunch of promo footage that was shot and intended to remain separate from the film.

At least it's not as bad as the Terminator films that seem to habitually ruin the twist in their trailers.

    Go with the classics:
    This Island Earth
The Day the Earth Stood Still (the second one sucked)
Journey to the Center of the Earth (with Arlene Dahl)
    Forbidden Planet
    Colossus: The Forbin Project

Just like the Disney Star Wars, we hardcore-ish fans like to see
just how they will screw up a good series and it's storyline.
So in a way they are more for us to watch and see where it all
    kinda goes down hill.
However, Covenant was kinda boring, and so was the other one. :p
Though they did manage to squeeze in some alien hentai in the first
of the two 'prequels', so now we know they have no clue that we know
they are into to some strange shit. :p

I have the whole ALIEN franchise in a playlist on my PLEX. Watching now. Seemed fitting for a Sunday marathon while I write.

ETA: Right now, as we speak, we are just finding out that "Ash is a goddam robot!" 11:41 am, GMT-4

ETAA: Lambert just gave the all-time best horror death scream in cinema history as the xenomorph closes in. Disturbing to the core because there's an unspeakable, appallingly sexual component to how it sounds. 11:52 am GMT-4

ETAA: Now Ripley is explaining to a conference room full of suits that "If just one of those things gets down here, then all this, this bullshit that you think is so important, you can just kiss all that goodbye." The suits are impassive and unswayed. 12:34 pm, GMT-4

    Yes. Especially Forbidden Planet.
Also 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea (James Mason version)

    And why not:

    Arrival
    2001: A Space Odyssey
Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan

Dark Star! OMG. I forgot about that one. Who could ever forget the orange beach ball? Yeah. And I also loved Alien. And 2001: A Space Odyssey. And Blade Runner. Avatar. Children of Men. Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Probably a few others as well. (I don't count Star Wars, because to me that wasn't really Sci-Fi, but fun fantasy ...although the original is still my favourite movie of all time.)

For good Sci-Fi, I prefer TV series to one-off movies, really. When I think of great filmed Sci-Fi, it's TV series that usually come to mind. I like the slower pace and the ability to develop settings, plots and characters that a series gives us. I have many complete TV series on DVD, which I watch in orgy fashion every now and again. Farscape (my very favourite.) Babylon 5. Battlestar Galactica (remake ...although I get SO mad at the way the wrong elements took over the story....grrr....) Firefly. :) Survivors (both the original and the remake.) There are also some good series (like most of the Star Trek franchise) that I watched, but never bought on DVD.

I am surprised nobody has mentioned Metropolis ( silent film) yet.
