Hi everybody. I just want to know if it would be offensive to have a jewish character who is also a werewolf or not. His religion and species are completely unrelated and do not have any sort of correlation with one another. He would just be jewish but also a werewolf. I understand that there are certain mythological races that you cannot depict jewish people as since it's antisemitic but I cannot find anything about werewolves. I do not want to cause offense at all so any help — especially from anybody who is jewish — would be much appreciated. Thank you.
Pretty sure Being Human does that, both the US and UK versions. Really the only time I even thought about that was wondering why his Star of David didn't hurt his vampire friend when he entrusted it to him to hold on to during the full moon (I think it was because you have to be actively trying to repel a vampire with a symbol of your faith in order for it to work). Why would it be offensive? Are you depicting werewolves as always chaotic evil monsters both in and out of wolf form, and is this the only Jewish character in the story? If so, maybe, but werewolves really don't fit with the traditional malicious stereotypes about Jewish people, so, while I'm not Jewish, I personally can't see it being likely people will read much into this unless there's something I'm not seeing here.
Hi! Werewolves in my universe all have their own individual personalities in and out of their werewolf forms, and this guy in particular is just like a typical late teens/early 20s guy — friendly, outgoing, adventurous, a little rowdy perhaps. Even in his werewolf form he isn't particularly aggressive or violent or anything like that like some werewolf characters are. This story would focus on the two main characters and their families so there would be about 4-6 jewish characters. His religion and species wouldn't particularly be the main focus of the story either, just aspects of his character. I just want to be sure that a character having those two attributes wouldn't be considered offensive.
I actually dealt with this in my novels I am currently writing. Decided it was too difficult to tackle subjects others will be way more knowledgeable about. So I made up new gods, creatures, myths and religions. Much easier and doesn't limit my creativity.
I don't see why a Jewish werewolf would be a problem. Would be interesting to see him try to avoid pigs in wolf form.
