    anime help

Discussion in 'Entertainment' started by MikesterManifest, Nov 11, 2014.

I'm looking for an action anime with the following filters:

No superatural stuff (powers, demons, dark forces, magic etc)

    Realistic setting.

No sex scenes or provocative women.

I would like it if it was Japanese with English subtitles.

I'd probably wouldn't mind if there were giant robots but thats it.

    Battle Royale? Gundam Wing?

Why anime? Hasn't it sort of had it's day?

    I don't think you're looking for anime...

oh please, like its impossible to find an anime that fits my description?

well because i've never watched an anime before in my life. All the ones I've heard of had demons or some supernatural stuff that my parents wouldn't allow. I'm still living under their roof so I want to find one that doesn't break their rules

In the land of anime, action is always paired either with dark forces or boobiage. There are plenty of anime that answer to the latter part of your needs, but they aren't action. I recently watched Miyazaki's From Up On Poppy Hill and it was great, fills all the things you ask for except the action part.

Well do you at least know anime that fight supernatural yet Scientific things?

Dark forces and nudity/sexual content is something I absolutely can't (and don't want to) watch

You'd be pretty freaking hard pressed to be honest. It might be because I don't like the genre a whole lot, but you are seriously stacking the odds against yourself here.

My advice is don't bother, to be honest. Watch Ghost in the Shell, Full Metal Alchemist, and Cowboy Bebop (the only ones that seem to be any good) and then move quickly on to other, interesting things.

Again, yes, I do, like Ghost in the Shell, which is hard science fiction, no demons or supernatural stuff, but... tits.

Not really. The ones I named might serve you fairly well, but my suggestion of don't bother still stands. In fact I want to emphasize it.

The only anime that comes to mind at all is something from my childhood (I'm 44) called Starblazers. It's action. It's science, not supernatural. And it's a little more innocent in presentation than post anime-invasion stuff. But we're talkin' old-school. ;) I don't even know where you would look for it today.

...Sword art online? It's an anime about people who get stuck in a video game. It get's really hardcore at the end of season one but you never get actual inappropriate content (no nudity actually shown...) until near the end. The villain is pretty much obsessed with this girl and is planning to keep her trapped in the game no matter what. MC gets impaled by a sword, gravity is increased, but he ends up cutting the guy's head off in game.

IN GAME. No spoilers here as to what happens at the end!

Lots of action too btw. And lots of girls, but its never innapropriate. The guy just saves a lot of girls by sheer coincidence lol. (a younger one and her pet dragon, a smith, and a girl who shot a bank robber in season three and is dealing with nightmarish after effects of saving everyone's lives in that event.)

There is the Hack series, that is also about characters inside of a video game where supernatural stuff happens - in the video game. The problem is it sucks harder than deeply fried lemonade.

I know this isn't the point here, and I would absolutely posit that a lot of anime is garbage, but if you look, there's some fine stuff with merit. I'm just saying: It's doesn't need to be seen as the move-by-quickly thing. It can be very artistic and expressive. (Don't worry, just espousing a slant, not trying to start any conversation. <insert emoticon>)

To the OP, your filters are pretty tight. I by no means have watched a lot of anime, but even within the what I have watched, supernatural aspects tend to play a large role, at least when any action is involved. This doesn't have the animation type that I'm sure you're looking for, but you might like it. It's a some-twelve minute short film, called Tsumiki No Ie.

@Lemex : I'd recommend this to you too. (Your leisure, of course.)

ETA: It sucks when things suck that hard (to the lemonade). And, the short film is probably on Youtube. I watched it online somewhere, like a bastard.

I know there are some good anime out there. I see it much like I see fanfiction. watch the examples that everyone knows is good, and then move on. FLCL is an anime I like but I didn't name, as is Bleach from what I've seen. It's just they are not good enough to say they are worth much more than a single viewing, while things like Cowboy Bebop I'd happily watch a few times.

That's just my opinion, though, it's not printed on bible paper.

I get you. I've been trying to find and watch the category Bebop level stuff. I've been successful. I think the problem is a good way to approach it, especially since this sort of thing (anime) is cluttered with mediocre products. I think animation, by its nature, can express in ways that traditional film can't. This can be reversed, too, but to me, it's worth exploring on the side.

Fair enough. My opinions are really just my own, and they are not printed on bible paper. I can admit I'm likely harsher on the genre than I should really be.

I've had periods where I've really tried with it, other times when I've literally been force-fed it. My relationship with the medium is a complex one, one that for the most part has't honestly been positive.

Same here (with the opinions). Not trying to convert (though, I suppose that isn't entirely genuine). Just unnecessarily kinda spewing my garbage.

You can look for Miyazaki's "Castle In The Sky" (originally called "Laputa" in Japan). Lots of action, no sex or sexy women, just some pretty advanced science. My roommate has a version of it that is in Japanese with English subtitles. The only issue you might have with it is that the protagonists are a couple of young kids (hence, no sex, I guess). Still, it's a good, visionary movie that seems to fit your requirements. Probably lots of Miyazaki's work does, actually.

OH that was the first one i saw by him! Loved it! I still laugh my head off when the boy tries to get the necklace to make him float and he falls into the basement :D Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is a good one as well -if a bit supernatural. But then its based on what would happen after our world has been polluted to the point where humanity struggles to survive, and poisonous jungles filled with bugs have taken over most of the planet.

    Hoh? Over already?
Oh well, I'll still suggest Trigun.
It has a bit of supernatural but is mainly guns and bullets most of the time.
Is like desert punk western version of Cowboy Bebop.
