Not sure if this is in the wrong section, but anyways. I am currently writing a novel at the moment, and I am intending to put quotes at the beginning at every chapter. They'll be related to the stuff in the chapter, of course. Just wondering if you had any input.
some of the short stories I've read do that. H.P. Lovecraft in particular. I don't see anything wrong with it as long as the quote is related in some way to the chapter. It should have significant meaning. I wouldn't just throw a quote in at the beginning unless you feel it truly belongs in the chapter rather than just throwing one in so that they all have one or something like that. Example: HP Lovecraft The Outsider [block quote] [centered] "..." - Keats Story
The one thing that I absolutely can't abide in fiction is people using their own quotes to start a chapter in their own book. I mean, I've only ever seen amateurs try it, but oh my god it irks me.
Are you referring to fictitious quotes, such as the ones Frank Herbert placed at the beginning of each chapter of Dune?
That sorta thing is okay, but the specific ones I'm referring to are when people use quotes from characters in their novel as headers to the chapter.
