Draft2Digital told me something that didn't make sense. If there's someone out there who knows a bit about how ISBN numbers work, I would appreciate your opinion(s). I contacted D2D because, when uploading a book to their new print-on-demand service, I didn't see any way to NOT have them distribute to Amazon and Barnes & Noble (both of which already have the book). A customer service agent responded that due to contractual terms with their print-on-demand partner, they cannot unselect any distribution avenues. She then went on to suggest that I could have D2D publish the same book and have it available on Amazon in addition to Amazon's own listing, but that I would have to assign it a second ISBN because it would be a "second printing." I replied that this makes no sense and I asked for clarification of why it's a second printing, and after a week there has been no response from D2D. Here's the e-mail from D2D: I have never heard of second printings getting separate ISBNs. I used my own ISBN, not an ISBN provided by Amazon. That means I am identified as the publisher, and I don't think it makes any difference who happens to print a copy of the book. As long as the body of the book hasn't changed significantly, my understanding has been that it retains the same ISBN. Am I wrong on this?
