    Coolest weapons you've heard/thought of

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by Bongo Mongo, Dec 18, 2009.

I am trying to differentiate my fantasy novel with different types of weapons than just sword, spear, staff, et cetera. I just watched Star Wars and I realized that a big reason it was so popular was because it had an awesome weapon, the light saber.

So I am wondering, what are your favorite weapons you use in your stories, or have seen in movies?

    A yo-yo.

For real. How often do you see people using yo-yos as a weapon? It's badass.

I guess it depends on the character. I always like the bolo for that kind of hands on killer.

"There wasn't a soul in the crew that would tangle with Slide. Cool efficiency itself looks this guy up for tips. I remember Joey Rock tried to run from him once. Slide just stood there twirling that ****ing bolo thing, watching J Rock stumble as he kept looking back. With the flick of a wrist, that thing went flying so fast I thought it must have teleported or something. Anyway, this thing wraps around Joey's head, knock's him the **** out! Slide just strolls up all nonchalant, unwraps this thing and without a ****ing pause, slices ole' boys throat. I tell you, he didn't blink an eye. Stone faced killer, that's Slide."

Play any Gears? That's why I am reminded of with that weapon, only it's not a shotgun.

Yeah, Dreaming. That would have been my reply.

I love dual swords and there is something about the staff has this quiet and deadly superiority about it that has always gripped me

The idea comes from Gears yeah, I just wanted to make it noisier and less practical and therefore more awesome.

I've always loved the witch king's mace from LotR. That thing is ridiculous.

It's really cool when someone can use something super unconventional, and pull it off.

    "Seriously? Who throws a shoe?"

The only one I'm familiar with is Ness. XD

But everyone knows the coolest weapons in the universe are two-handed swords that are as large if not larger than the heroes who wield them.

    I rest my case. :D

    R. A. Salvatore's The Cleric Quintet's central figure, the cleric Cadderly Bonaduce, wielded a yo-yo as a weapon.

At this point it's prudent to mention Yahtzee and his Painkiller review:

"I could mention the hugely satisfying penis-extension gun which pins baddies to walls with entire trees, but all you really need to know is that there's a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning. I wish I could make something like that up. It shoots shurikens and lightning, it could only be more awesome it it had t**s and was on fire."

Failing that, pass me Masamune with Sephiroth. That should work, having the One-Winged Angel come along to stab people with the longest sword in history.

Nanomachines that are injected into the bloodstream.
They can lie dormant indefinitely, but will explode if activated by remote command.

Just like the 'cookie cutters' from Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age.
They are injected into prisoners and activated should they escape or are sentenced to execution.

    Scary!

A sword isn't one type of weapon, it's a few hundred. If you design a sword that's more than one type, then add something shiny, it's going to be brilliant ;)
