    Sweet-sounding names

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by AlexaRobyns, Oct 1, 2011.

I am having trouble naming my main character. It's a girl and I would like her to name a sweet-sounding name. Like a name that sounds kind and gentle. Thanks in advance for your help.

Also, yes, I am planning on it being a fanasty-ish novel. But the main girl is human.

Is this in a fantasy story?

Most names that end in y sound incredibly feminine and gentle. Lily, Daisy, Amy, Molly, Lucy, etc. Names that have Ann in them do too. Annalisa, Anne, Anna, Annabelle, etc. There are other themes that are very girly as well, those are just the first ones I've thought of. Or you could go with more classical, older names. It's really up to you and how it fits with your character.

Floral names have a feminine ring to them: Violet, Rose, Iris etc.

What about: Faith, Hope or Charity.

Amy sounds like a good name. ;) Although being raised in a house full of boys has occasionally kept "gentle" from being a word that would be assoicated with my name but only when it was really important that I get my way. lol

Personally, I'd go with something that ends in "anna." Brianna, Adrianna, Vivianna, etc.

    Aura, Sienna, Vellia, Luciana, Reese,
Have more vowels, less consonants. Try to avoid names with sharp r, s, t, sounds for a softer name. The last letter too, should be a vowel.

I look to the French and Italian for sweet names. lol
Natalie, Amelie, Donatella, Charisse, Coralie, Georgette, and Gemma are some of my personal faves :) (I think those are French and Italian anyway!)

Since it's fantasy, are you making new names or using common names?
Musical sounding names like Aria or Dulcet might be good if it's a medieval setting.

Kyrie, Lilyanna, Camilla. These all sound very whimsical, yet still something the reader can relate to.

I find many names that end in vowels, Y or L to be very good, like many other people. Alice, Grace, Joy, April and Lisa Are a few I kind of like.

Iris, Amanda, Emily, Naomi, Kathleen, Angela. Man, there's no shortage of great female names.

I'd suggest Googling a baby naming site.
