Might sound like an easy enough thing to search for myself but I'm not getting very far. Can anyone recommend any good photograph collections of America in the 50s/60s. In fact America of any decade (just not present). I don't mind a few 'photographer's notes' on the images, but really just looking for collections of the photos themselves. PS. I'm aware of The Family of Man.
You might try searching by names of famous photographers of America, like Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Weejie (sp?) Diane Arbus, etc. Or just search for "Famous American Photographers". Many names come up. Just tried Famous American Street Photographers and some good results are coming up. One of them is Stanley Kubrick, before he became a director, worked for Look magazine and developed his eye there.
Thank you but I was hoping to find a book, rather than just online images. I've been searching and there's nothing cheap out there. Typical.
Used bookstores? Photography manuals? The other idea is to look at college libraries especially ones that offer photography courses, maybe university as well.
Used book shops are a bit thin on the ground in my neck of the woods (not that they'll be open anyway at the moment). Charity shops will be worth checking out when we return to normal. Manuals aren't really what I'm looking for. I don't want tutorials or essays, just collections of photos. Like 2nd hand book shops, libraries are at death's door in the UK. Even during normal times they're hardly ever open. When they are open they're unstaffed and you have to go through a right old rigmarole to get a passkey.
