    "Dreamcatcher" by Stephen King

Discussion in 'Discussion of Published Works' started by Mallory, Feb 28, 2011.

Has anyone read King's "Dreamcatcher?" I'm reading it right now and really liking it to the point where once I start reading, nothing else gets done that night.

I've read a couple of King's other books and they were nowhere near as well done; only a few scary parts in a "horror" novel, slow-moving, etc. Sure I've read other good books by him as well, but I normally find him somewhat overrated.

This book is really, really great though. Has anyone seen the movie? Does the movie have the reddish-gold fungus in it?

What are your opinions on the book? Who are your favorite characters? I like Beaver.

I'm a huge fan of SK, but have to admit that I haven't read "Dreamcatcher". I am trying to fight my way through "Under The Dome" though, but it has a rather dizzying cast of characters.

Most of his best work, in my humble opinion of course, is from the early days - "The Dead Zone", "The Stand", "Firestarter", "Christine", "It" etc. I feel like with each passing decade he just slips a little further, but he did start from a very great height, so maybe that is inevitable. :)

Well give the man a little curtousy, how many books has he writen?

I've read 'dreamcatcher' I loved it. It is by far one of my favourite books, when reading, it was a case that I couldn't put it down, I love alot of SK's books, but this is a shiner from what I've read. The film adaptation isn't great, the books much better in every way.
Ah! I'm trying to remember a charecter... was it Dudits? Ah!

Yep, Duddits. Same $#it, different day. :D

Did the movie have the red-gold fungus growing all over people, in the bathroom scene etc? I have a very vivid mental picture and I'm curious to see how the screen handles it.

Yea, the movie has the fungus but it's more red than red-gold. The bathroom scene is there too. The ending of the movie is horrible though.

Horrible as in gory/gross, or badly done, or not loyal to the book?

I've seen the movie. It's really great. If you like Larry Cohen's movies or bad-good horror films like "Legion" and "The Happening," you'll love it. Damian Lewis' performance is insane.

Horrible as in badly done. You basically get railroaded into a wall. You wait for an explanation of things, but instead its simply the end. Movie over.

For comparison, look at the ending of the Mist (another movie based on a Stephen King story). The ending to the movie was an improvement over the story in the fact that it actually had an ending.

Oh God, someone mentioned..The Happening. I now need to vomit again.

Liked the book, never loved it.

Kind of liked the movie, but nothing to write home about.

I think that a person's sense of humor can be determined by whether or not they liked The Happening. If you don't like The Happening, you don't have a sense of humor.

Haven't read Dreamcatcher but I've most King books. Really enjoyed his "On Writing". In general, his writing has gotten worse over the years, except for an occasional gem. I liked Green Mile a lot. Most of his books start out great, only to disappoint in the end. Like It: a spider? Really?

First of all, I doubt it. Second of all, learn to spell "quite" correctly.

I like both endings, I liked that it didn't end, they simply wander throughout the fog, trapped at the end of the book, but I liked the irony of the ending the movie. Can't choose which I prefer >.<. I was very happy to see how close they stuck to the original material though, no need to alter something thats already great... like they did with Dreamcatcher (Shuders).

I would have liked the ending in the story of Mist a lot more if Stephen King didn't use that type of ending so much. It's like he can't think of a proper ending to a story so he leaves it at a cliffhanger or creates a time loop. It's one my biggest peeves with him.

Oh, that's the one with the "sh*tweasel".. I liked that one, the movie was awful (the ending ?!) , but the book was well done.

Not my favourite King though.. He's got many and it's hard to pick my favourite though. It changes often, but Dreamcatcher normally hangs in the middle of the scoreboard.

Have fun with it though! You might like Misery too, lot of tension in that one!!

I read Misery a long long time ago and loved it.

My first King book was Cujo when I was around 11 and I read Carrie shortly after.

I skimmed through the one about the car (Christine?) but it didn't seem as good as the others.

I didn't think "Under the Dome" was that thrilling; I mean it took a while to get into and the premise wasn't that scary; although I only read about three chapters so maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance.

I'd definitely say you didn't give Under the Dome much of a chance. The Dome in of itself wasn't scary and I don't think it was supposed to be. What was scary to me were what was responsible for the Dome and why.

I thought Under the Dome started well, but got a bit meh half way though. Thus why King should cut most his books in half.

Misery is one of his best in my opinion.

If a book doesn't grab you by 3 chapters in, it probably isn't worth it.
