    Macros for MicroSoft 365?

Discussion in 'Writing Software and Hardware' started by fairbro, Aug 28, 2021.

I am stuck with MicroSoft 365 until I finish this draft of my book. It's "eaten my homework" a couple of times and it seems to be not under my control. Since I paid for it, yes it would be nice if I had more actual control over the software, such as switching on/off a feature like "Auto-Save".

I don't want to save it to Microsoft's "Cloud" where the MicroDog might decide to goobble it down for lunch. I am saving it on my local hard drive. After a long slog through the Google weeds, however, I did discover the Microsoft Royal German Shepherd does not condescend to offer you the opportunity to "autosave" it to your own computer. "Autosave" is reserved for the bouffant, the elitists who trust the Microdog Cloud will not get hungry. My problem is I get so engrossed in the pleadings of my characters, that I forget to save, then I hit the wrong key combo, the program collapses like a big-top tent losing it's anchors, and my last 5 pages vanich into the Twilight Zone.

So has anyone ever written a macro on Microsoft 365? I am thinking of a macro that would auto-save my work every 5 minutes.

Well, that's easy. Just go to "Developer" tab then select "Record Macro".

But how to get it to run every 10 minutes?

You can control auto-save, and you can set the default directory where your work gets saved. Go to File > Options.

In options, the fourth choice down on the menu at the left is "Save." From that window you can both control auto-save and set the default directory where your work will be saved.

Most users won't see the Developer tab. By default, it's not displayed. It has to be turned on by the user.

    Thanks for the help.

Looks like it doesn't auto-save the file itself, it saves "auto-recover information." Just trust this won't get gnawed away by MicroRat.

I see if you have two files on two different topics, you can't make a different default directory for each one. The MicroRat just puts them all into one big pile.

Talked on their chat line, and asked the tech "expert." "Can I autosave my file to my C: drive?" He said you can only autosave it to the (their) cloud.

Good ol' Microsoft, stalled the advance of hi-tech for 20 years, tried to take over the internet and use it for its get-rich personal advertising platform, caused more problems for more people than any other organization in world history. And after I PAY for this POC, the Redmond MicroRat won't even let ME control MY program on MY computer.

I guess you are correct -- it isn't a true auto-save, it's an auto-backup. Which is better than nothing -- at least nothing gets lost if your system crashes -- but an auto-save feature would be better.

There is only one default directory but, once you save a file for the first time, thereafter that file's location because the default for that file. That's why you can save by hitting "Save" instead of "Save as."
