    Magic with consequences

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Billijak, Dec 14, 2021.

    Hi all,
I'm attempting to write a fantasy novel and I'm exploring ideas as to how using magic can debilitate a character.
In my story goblins have a natural affinity with magic but through reasons I won't bore you with now, a small handful of humans also have the ability to use magic. It is passed down to certain people through bloodlines and considered a curse. However certain factions learn to harness this magic but I want it to come at a cost.
I've not an avid sci f/fantasy reader but I'm well aware that this is a very common trope and explored in many books.
I'm trying to think up someone unique, which I know is probably nigh on impossible as everything has pretty much been done before.
I just don't want to write something specific that's already been done.
I initially had the magic accelerate the age of a the person if used, but only marginaly at first. Kind of like cigarettes but worse.
Or maybe the magic use has an effect on their senses and the more the magic is used the less sensitive their hearing, eyesight etc becomes.
Anyway just thought I would throw that out there as I've read some very helpful posts on here.
    Thanks for your time.
