Wasn't able to edit my original thread, so I'll open this thread up for voting on the May WF Book Club options. Each member will be allowed two votes. Voting will close in seven days. I look forward to seeing what we end up with!
We're doing great so far. I chose one I have in my own pile to read as well as one I'd like to try out.
Ooooh, things are getting spicy between McCarthy and Heinlein. This is the most exciting thing all day, hahaha.
Ah. But Stranger in a Strange Land is now asserting a very clear lead. Spoiler: These were my choices (for those who’re bored enough to know) 1. The Girl With The Curious Hair - DFW 2. The Remains of the Day - KI
I'm thinking those two will come back around as choices for June. They got some votes, and they are some of the more literary of the choices.
Really? Wow. That seems somewhat incidental! Well you know what they say about minds that think alike...
We have a winner with seven votes for Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land . This is the Hugo Best Novel Award winner for 1961, and one of a few Hugo Award winning novels by the author. I've actually had this one on my shelf for some time, but have yet to read it. Excited to get started though. On May 20th, I will be opening the discussion thread with a number of prompt questions ranging from general narrative opinions, to specific craft analysis questions involving elements I found prominent in the story's design (i.e. use of setting, productivity of dialogue, perspective, et cetera). Of course, feel free to divert from the prompts, and discuss topics on your own that you note as you go through what is argued to be Heinlein's greatest novel. I have a paper copy, which I prefer, but for anyone who wants a free online read, I have found it here: https://archive.org/details/StrangerInAStrangeLandRobertAHeinlein/page/n1/mode/2up . This online copy may have a few extra passages from the original release, as I believe it may contain some of Heinlein's more coarse political rhetoric that was originally cut by the editors. The original copy itself was banned from most public school libraries at the time already because of some of the cultural and political ideologies presented, so anything more aught to be even more radical. Anyways, hope you enjoy the first month's reading! I look forward to a strong discussion after we've finished. Any further suggestions for books for the month of June can be left in the Forum Book Club original thread. Happy reading!
I read Puppet Masters not long ago. Despite that, I've been looking forward to reading more Heinlein. Stranger was high on the list. I didn't vote for it, but I can't wait to read it anyway, and I can't wait to talk about it especially. I never get to do that! I'm so looking forward to book club!
