My current project has a rebellion fighting an oppressive government, and I'd like their hidden base to be named after a castle where a rebellion took place. Or maybe where a battle was fought against overwhelming odds. Just something that adds a little symbolism to the name, you know? I haven't been able to find anything that fits, though. Any suggestions? It's fine if it's not something that most people would know about.
It's set in a country that doesn't exist in the real world, but I guess it mostly has a North American culture.
You're not likely to find a north American castle... so i guess you are looking at England/Wales ... Rochester could be an option (held against the french numerous times), or Ruthven (technically a barracks not a castle - besieged by jacobites and held by the english)... tbh every english castle pretty much has been beseieged at some point in its history - google will be your friend. if you want north american options - fort loyal (at Falmouth Maine) was a settler fort desytroyed by a combined french and AmerIndian attack... fort New Casco (in the same location) was beseiged by indians for two months, and held by vastly outnumbered settlers
North America also had a couple of fortified cities. Probably most notable being Quebec City, but Fort Louisbourg in Cape Breton is still standing and is being maintained as a historical site that can be visited for reference, and though Montreal used to have fortifications, they've mostly been demolished. All of them, though, were subject to their own sieges during the Age of Expansion and Age of Revolution. My personal favorite being the Battle of Quebec in 1775.
You could use the Bastille. I'm sure many people would recognize that off the bat. Pretty major stepping stone in the French Revolution.
I only know of Rochester Castle because of the action movie Ironclad (2011). It depicts King John's siege in 1215.
