Hello! I'm a new writer, and while I've been writing on and off since I was young, I've only just started to get serious with it and increase my output. Throughout the second half of elementary school, I drew maps of fantasy worlds religiously, like every single day I had a new one, and some of the projects got far enough along in development to get short stories written about them. I'm pretty sure more of my time was spent thinking of lore than was spent on schoolwork. At some point, I realised creative writing and visual art as a way to explore the worlds I've built and to make them feel more alive, so when secondary school rolled around, I decided to "lock in" if you will, and started writing more and more. Almost every other day I'd open a google doc and write a page or two of some new story set in a different world. Eventually I figured that I needed somewhere to archive my stuff where other people can see it, because my Google Drive can only suffice for so long. Afternoon, 16:00, 2023 CE "Man, I have all these stories but I can't get feedback on all of them. I need to post them somewhere. I wonder if there's a place dedicated to creative writing." *google creative writing form* "well golly"
Hi debel, nice to have you here. Just so you understand, this isn't a site where you can just post stories. Really we're a critique site, and we have discussions about writing. If you want to post something of yours, first you need to do critiques on two things posted by other people, then you can post yours and it will be critiqued. And usually we just post excerpts, unless they're really short stories. We generally keep it under around 2,000 words or so, just so it's manageable. Much beyond that and it becomes too much to read in one go and to give a critique on. If you're looking for a place to just post stories, you might try Wattpad. But even if you do that, we hope you hang around here for the sparkling conversation and the cookies.
Maps! I mean, welcome! Also, Maps! I love world creation maps! Hope to see more of you around! The two for one critique policy may seem a little restrictive at first but I’ve really come to appreciate it. It acknowledges the value of people’s time spent writing, editing, reading, commenting and such. As a result, when people post, it’s usually something they’ve carefully considered and spent time polishing, and there will be people to read and critique because the relevant threads aren’t bombarded or subject to data dumps.
Hello and welcome debel, please make yourself at home. We are all things writing, and you will find a lot of resources, support and encouragement here. Looking forward to seeing you in the forums!
Hey debel, I can understand drawing maps in school. While I didn't start as early as you have, I really got into it during my junior and senior years of high school, which I guess can be said as to my true start with writing, even if the ideas I've had for these maps never were made in the written word. After all the years since then, it's difficult for me to imagine any length of time without reading and writing. I hope to see you more throughout the forums, once I can get used to being here, being a new member myself and all.
Yay, maps! Ahem. I mean, welcome to the forum, of course! I'd love to see some of your maps at some stage -- if you're willing to share, that is. Alas, my artistic ability is pants, and seems to be reserved for writing and music performance. Ah, well. I could shake my fist at the sky and rail and rant along the lines of "Why, God!? Whyyyyyyy??" But the only answer I'd get is: "Because." =P And supposing I persist in this line of questioning, and say " 'Because' is not a good answer!", the aforementioned deity -- assuming that he exists, and furthermore that he is male -- would reply: " 'Why?' is not a good question." But this is all opening up all kinds of theological and philosophical discussions that don't really belong here, other than me being silly. (I do that. Because I like a good laugh). So, welcome again, and thrice be welcome!
