    Onomatopoeia?!

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Daydream, Feb 14, 2012.

Hey could someone inform me on how to best describe onomatopoeia in writing? I'm currently writing a short story where my character makes "vroom" noises to imitate a spaceships sound. Problem is I have no idea how to describe this lol! Any help is appreciated! Thanks! :)

if a spaceship is in space, it would make no sound, would it?... since sounds can not be heard in a vacuum...

Yes, but that doesn't stop kids trying to imitate what they think a spaceship sounds like, for example. But you answered your own question by writing 'vroom'.

It's not in space mammamaia :p Like Madhoca said it's a child imitating the sounds of a spaceship. I know i kinda snwered my own question, but I'm having trouble putting it into a sentence. I'm not sure how to word it. Maybe something along the lines of "Vroom," shouted Benny, imitating the sounds of a spaceship. Would that work?

You're on somewhat dangerous ground here. 'Vroom' seems to work..sorta... but efforts to do this kind of thing sometimes fall very flat. You might decide to not try it:

    *thinks back to childhood*

Benny was playing with dog poo while making spaceship sounds. Again.

Hmm I could try to skip it but I'd prefer to add it since my story is all about a childs playtime/imagination. There must be a good way to describe this :(

    A good reason to try.
What do kids think spaceships (alien, I'm assuming) sound like?
A kid who hasn't seen many movies might think they make the sound of a human jet plane, only more! so.
A kid who has seen movies might think - given advanced methods of propulsion or whatever - that they are pretty (or unnervingly) quiet..and perhaps the only sound is the noise as the thing cuts through the air etc etc

"Vroom-vroom" shouted Benny, and started running around the room with both arms stretched out sideways. "Look at me, I'm a spaceship!"
    Something like that.

What about putting it in a dialogue where it is clear it is the kid speaking, like:

Spaceships do make sounds. You can hear them when they enter a planets atmosphere. They go "vshhhhh, vshhhhh, voooop," when they land and "WOoWOoWooWoo," when take of. Ask any kid. "Vroom, vroom," is for the more primitive forms of transport like the earthlings use.

yes, that's what i thought about 'vroom' too... i doubt kids today would use that sound for a spaceship... it's more a land vehicle sound effect...

A spaceship would presumably make sounds that could be heard inside the spaceship (or by somebody in physical contact outside).

And anybody who has seen Saturn 5 will know that somebody outside a spaceship in space can hear a gunshot and throw themself to the ground :)

I'm going to join in on this boat. Spaceships need lots of "SHHH"s with a couple "RRR"s and "KKK"s

    Shhhrrrrkkksshhhhaa

    Yeah.
I'm proud of myself. That is definitely a spaceship noise.
