    Brand new writer says hi.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by S.T., Jul 13, 2023.

    Hello all,

I only just discovered my love for writing. It was about two months ago when I started writing stories in a more serious way for my kids. It snowballed from there, one thing led to the other and over the past couple of months I have spent every free minute, when not working my tech job or being a dad and husband, with writing and studying the art of creative writing. Naturally I now joined a writing forum.

As for preferred genre, they're fiction and horror. Though, this is not set in stone. Set in very loose gravel, at most.

A personal challenge for me, besides learnih the art of creative writing, is that English is my second language. Vocabulary and grammer is certainly something I will be working on as well. But hey, I'm crispy 38 years old, so I have plenty of time to write many mediocre not-so-good or even utmost terrible stories before I write my best seller ;).

Happy to be here. You can expect some quite amateur questions from me.

    Yours truly, me.

    Hi S.T., and welcome!

I'm also brand new here, and have only started writing creatively recently. I also have a long tech background, so writing has been mostly functional previously - or sometimes highly creative, but in non-human languages! It's great that you've found something that you love.

It sounds like your English is excellent, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. In my experience, non-native speakers often use better grammar because they've actually had to study and learn it.

    Yours,
    Auriel

    Hi!

Some big names started in just the same way (Tolkien for one, in a way, and certainly the Rev. W. Awdry - many others I'm sure!) so I'm glad you discovered it. Enjoy writing and good luck!

    Hi and welcome,

You shouldn't worry about English being your second language. A lot of people who use English as their 1st language, get stuck in writing itself.
It's hard going, and learning curve all round. This is my experience in writing and still going at it :)

    Have a great day

Hello English secondary-language person! I'm also one. It's hard but you'll get there!

Welcome. I'm sure you'll master the often-confusing English language. When I sent my first novel out for an edit the editor replied "i can see English is not your first language." I was embarrassed to tell him it is my only language. But that was ten years ago, and I have written four novels since then and one in the works. So, write on brother you will do well.
