Hello to all … Does anyone have another way to say "or at least?" Very common phrase, I know. If none exists, I understand. Needless to say I have consulted several reputable thesauruses, none of whose options seemed to make any sense to me, before resorting to bothering the writing community here with such trivial matters. I thank you
There are none. Or at least, none that come to mind! hmmm... In that context, depending on how casual you're being, you could use "well"... "There are none. Well, none that come to mind". For a more archaic context, "leastways". Maybe "That is"?
Are you using it in the sense of, "We need at least six chicken legs." or the sense of "At least the chicken didn't burn." ? Or if you have an example, there might be a rephrasing rather than a synonym. Edited to add: My two examples could be rephrased as: We need no fewer than six chicken legs. Well, as one consolation, the chicken didn't burn.
The only ones I can think of that might remotely fit are 'leastways' , 'leastwise', 'anyway(s)' or 'anyhow'. If I were choosing one of those four, I'd probably go with 'leastways', although it's becoming quite a rare word these days. All four strike me as quite colloquial.
Hopefully one of these will help. slightly, somewhat, partially, bit by bit, by degree, halfway, measurably, not entirely, not fully, not wholly, so far as possible, to a certain degree, to a certain extent, up to a certain point, within limits.
What's wrong with "at least?" Seems like a pretty utilitarian phrase that does everything it's supposed to do without trying to sound fancy. Or draw attention away from the words around it.
"or at least" is and alternative. To what? To something more desired. I hope to win a gold medal, or at least silver. so: "failing that", "the next best thing" , "settle for" ? I'm not aware of a one-word synonym.
Or that is "At worst" for the "worst case scenario" interpretation and "that is" for the "let me respecify something" aspect.
