Hey there, my name's Adam and I'm 16. I'm from England. I'm interested in art, learning Japanese, computer programming, computerised 3d modeling, listening to music (mainly doom metal) and various other things. /standard intro I joined this forum in a vain attempt to improve my writing. I haven't wrote in so long and I really need to un-rust myself-- I used to write all the time as a kid. I'm also here to learn new things about writing which I may not have already known.
Hello Adam, Welcome to the Writing Forums. It's only a doomed attempt if you surrender before you begin. Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. I've been looking over random books or stories online and going "Does this sound good? Why does it sound good/Why is it bad?" etc. I'm making the effort to try and review other people's things. Thank you for the long, detailed post!
Yes, I'll have to agree with that. It is vital to get outside information in order to improve one's writing skills. To me, that simply common sense. I suppose i don't need to say any more to that, I'm sure that's basic philosophy on these forums . Yeah, I'm new as well. I thought I'd post here instead of making another thread for people to click on. I too, am here to improve my writing skills, and I"m glad to see this place has moderators that are willing to post welcomes in the introduction section. On a forum this big, that can be hard to do. Anyways, i hope this doesn't go under the category of highjacking, if it is, sorry Adam.
