Hi everybody. I am a new member here. I have always wanted to write books but because I am a master procrastinator, it never happened. When I was young, a few teachers told me I wrote very well. In the last years too, a few work colleagues and some of my boss told me the same thing so I said why not push it a little further and write my first novel? I am also a scientist so writing a book about nature is also one of my goals. I dont know which one I will write first. I began to make a list of all the ideas I have for a novel. I have about five ideas right now but one that is more in shape in my head. I would like to write horror novels but I would also like to try science-fiction too. So I am here in the hope of connecting with you fellow writers and also in the hope of getting motivation and start getting rid of my procrastination habit. Have a good day everybody
Welcome Stephen Keeping a progress journal here might help you with the procrastination issue. I wonder what you'll end up writing about. In any case, nature can be a character in any genre. In fiction, I like it when trees aren't just trees, but maple, or yellow birch, or beech and birds are kildeer or barn swallow... I'm sure you'll find plenty of support and valuable information here. Good luck with the writing!
Hi Quanta. Thanks for your welcome. Yes I just saw the progress journal section. I should post there. I should also find time to read more novels. I cant write a good novel without reading lots of novel. I was thinking of creating a book with a few short novels. I dont know if there is a name for this in english? Short stories? I would like to try different genre but horror is my favorite one. I would like to try science-fiction, espionnage and thriller too. Thanks again
Welcome, Stephan! I lived in Montreal for four years when I went to school. Loved everything except for the weather!
Ah ah but now with the global change, the winter is a lot shorter. The snow is almost completely gone now.
Greetings fellow Canadian (I'm in Ottawa). When I read your intro post, it occurred to me that your wanting to write both horror and science fiction should fit in well with the trends of the day. It drives me crazy that almost every science fiction story is also horror, but I suspect this would work out quite well for you. I prefer old-fashioned science fiction stories that explore ideas and the inventions leading from them (and the weirdness that may stem from them), but that's just me being older than snot.
I heard it's going back down to -26 over the coming weekend, though. And if my short stay in Montreal back in the 70s is anything to go by, you guys'll get it worse than we will. Sorry to be the harbinger of doom.
Hi Sack-a-Doo. In fact, I like it when science-fiction is mixed with horror. Something original that could be plausible. I also would like to talk about a crime and all the details and the views from the murderer. My father was a policeman so I read lots of police files about criminals ...
Cool. Sounds like you've got three genres to draw upon... And you'd be following in Asimov's footsteps if you combined police procedural with science fiction. If you haven't already, you might check out his robot series, especially the stories featuring Elijah Bailey (The Naked Sun, Robots of Dawn, and The Caves of Steel).
I just bought a few science-fiction books lately but didn't have the time to start reading them. I received the seven Isaac Asimov novels from the Foundation series.
Before reading the last one in the Foundation series, you may want to familiarize yourself with the robot series, too. There's a link in that last Foundation novel. In fact, Asimov said quite late in his career that all three of his big series(es) were linked (Empire, Foundation and Robots).
