Hi! My name is Josh and I have been wanting to write for a while, but I never really got into actually doing it. The biggest problem I have seems to be putting imagined fiction on paper. I've looked at several writing sites but have recently decided that a better idea would be to look at a forum (and kinda wonder why it took so long for the idea to hit me...). I have a feeling that for me, learning to write may be similar to learning a math subject or a programming language in that I can read about it and read about it all I want. I could read about the subject for years and read about every little detail, every little trick, every little bit of advice and, like many people, still turn out to be a complete dunce on the subject matter, unable to apply it well (if at all) and finding it easier to shamelessly give up. For me, writing fiction seems to be the same way except that I make an active effort to apply it, with little to no results. So part of the reason I am here may be seeking that missing element of the learning process. I can write a hell of a letter or research paper but if I have to do so much as an opening paragraph of a short story my mind tends to break down like an overworked machine where some careless worker decided to cram in too much whatever and expected it to help him/her get finished faster. At least this seems to be how things feel inside my head.

I'm currently a sophomore in my university, majoring in Computer Science. I have been wanting to take some creative writing classes to pursue my writing interests but they always fill up. I'm an avid Sci-Fi reader but some of my favorite books are from other genres as well, from Robert Asprin to Tom Clancy to Beverly Cleary to Larry Niven.

Don't worry, I've read the rules and even made sure to look at... oh, this. :)

I hope for good times here in this community!

Oh yeah, and I like The Doors.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Enzo03!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself and Cogito) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.
