I've got a good title for my WIP novel. It wasn't until I was almost done that I came up with my title, but I think it fits perfectly, and I'm definitely satisfied with the title. Here's the thing. I recently wrote a new short story, and part of me wants to use the same title for this short story. The short story and the novel have nothing to do with each other, but the title would be very fitting for either or both. I am looking at this from the perspective of trying to traditionally publish both of these separately. I'm guessing that it's a bad idea to use the same title twice, but I thought I would see what you guys think. Have you or would you use the same title for more than one piece of writing? I am definitely keeping the title for my novel.
Hmm... As a reader, if I saw that an author had a story and a novel with the same title, I'd probably assume that they were tightly connected, like Isaac Asimov's novel Nightfall being an expanded version of the original short story. I guess it wouldn't be a terribly big deal if they're not, though I can't speak for how a publisher might feel about the situation. There's some potential for confusion, but unless your short story becomes a massive, award-winning classic, you can probably just slap a note in the novel's foreword explaining the situation, right?
I’ve written poems based on my short stories because the submission process for short stories takes forever. I changed the titles to avoid confusion.
Yeah, I didn't think it was the best idea. It just seemed to fit both stories. I think I'll save it for my novel.
