    Hello and Hola

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Lengo, Jan 18, 2008.

Well, here I go again! I've signed up for this site and hope to meet kind and generous people. I've done that before and met many of said kind, and also a few of other kinds.

I wanna get started on the right foot, so I need to say few things about where I'm goin' and where I been.

Where I've been is around the block. I'm kinda an old fart, so I've seen lots -- more than I wanted to. I don't adhere to any dogmas and have disdain for such things. I'm open minded, but this allows others to put things in my head that weren't necessarily asked for. Please refrain from doing that. In other words, unless I ask for criticism of my writing, don't offer it. Ratings are welcomed, however, good, bad, or in between, and I'm always open to discussion, and thoroughly enjoy those, but please don't correct my grammar. That's just plain rude if it ain't asked for.

Where I'm going is undecided. I don't read much fiction, so I won't be writing much of that. I read non-fiction, and generally the subject is historical or biographical. Therefore, most of what I write are essays. I like to expound rhetorically, right or wrong, serious or otherwise. I aim to entertain mostly, but at the same time, I hope to make you think. If you're not thinkin', I'm certain that'll show immediately, and I hope that I can jump start your brain for ya when it's needed.

I like to bend the rules a little too. I'm very fond of colloquialisms and sometimes I'll use 'is' instead of 'are', or 'thems' or 'theys' in place of 'those' or 'these'. Please don't correct those. But I promise you I'll never confuse there, they're, and their. I just hate it when I see those kind of mistakes. There just ain't no excuse for those kinds of mistakes.

I used to be a technical writer and wrote for Huge Aircrash Company, so when pressed, I know how to use the english language properly. But I don't like to be pressed, just like a pig or a turkey into lunch meat. I'm retired. I have little to prove. And I won't fit in any pigeon hole that you make for me. Don't be thinking I'm a rube though I may act the part. I'm just having fun. I hope you are too. One thing I can say that may sum it all up: Don't take it too seriously. There's the right way, the wrong way, and your way. Do what feels most comfortable and live. Don't sweat it, live it.

Now, like I said, I hope I meet many a delightful person here, maybe even someone special that I can settle down with. You'll find that I'm generous with praise, have good manners, and always wash behind my ears. If you're like-minded, I'm sure we'll get along just fine.

Now where's the refreshments? I need some punch and cookies, and I'd even go for some celery stuffed with Cheese-Whiz! This is the welcoming room, right? So where's the goodies? :D

Hello and welcome to our site! I hope in comparison to your long post this fulfills the purpose :)

Here's a basic welcome from all of us. It should be obvious, but in case it isn't, let me explain. The Writing Problems Area is exclusively where opinions on different ways to write, blockages in writing styles and similar problems can be discussed. In the Review Room, you can get critical appreciation and/or analysis of your written material. Behold, you must first review two pieces of writing before posting your own. This is ensure the pieces are evaluated to the most. Other than this, we have Writing Cotnests, weekly and monthly, where you can submit your writing. We also have Word games, Book Discussion and so on, classified under Community interaction. It may interest you if you're just hanging around.

adamant has been kind enough to put many of the things I have mentioned or missed out on in one comprehensive place. If you want to check it out, see the Newbie Packets:
    Noobie Packets! - Writing Forums

Enjoy it here, and don't feel shy to ask for help. We are all here to teach and learn in a mutual environment. And we hope you can do the same.

    Regards and Best Wishes!

Hello Lengo, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

I hope you'll forgive me if I forget on occasion and point out grammar. If it's intentional, that's fine, but all too often it isn't, so I'm likely to point it out if it seems to be the biggest issue. But that's only in the Review Rooms, where critique is the Dish of the Day anyway.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well!

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
